  • MK5 Tyres

Im in the market to buy new tyres, so im just curious to know what tyres people are using.

Im not trying to start a debate as to what tyre is better, just want to know whos using what.

    Thanks in advance!

I'd start a poll, but to lazy to put one together, and with the countless number of tyres/brands are out there it wouldnt accomodate..

    Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrical's

Ranked number 1 in many reviews include the EVO magazine review where they trumped all the rest. Definitely worth the money, the grip is amazing and better even than the CSC2's.

    or

    CSC2 and CSC3's.

Generally ranked 2nd or 3rd after the F1's and if they're a bit cheaper an excellent buy. CSC2's were an excellent tyre and wore well and the CSC3's are a small improvement in all areas.

But it's kind of pointless asking people to post and even to offer their opinion as often they're comparing new tyres to worn out ones and don't have the benefit of testing tyres side by side under all sorts of conditions on the same car at the same time so you're best of looking at the reviews of the tyres and the EVO review is one of the better ones as they used a GTI.

i have the cs2s and i'm not too thrilled with the grip. they corner well but i'm not so happy with them when taking off. though mav got a torque arm insert way before me so i'll be interested to see how much axle tramp has coloured my perceptions when i get mine done.

where'd you get your tyres mav?

You have to learn control at the lights The F1 Asymmetrical's are an improvement at the lights, still need to be careful or you just sit there smoking the tyres!

That mainly helps when you're chipped because the axle tramp get's a lot worse if you're not careful. Are you getting the 80 duro or the 90? I have the 80 as it's a bit softer.

Goodyear Woolloongabba, in the 4 for 3 sale. Around $1500 for 4 tyres (18"), wasn't planning to get them yet but one of the Dunlop Sport Maxx's picked up a puncture on the edge that couldn't be fixed so I decided to replace them all. The Sport Maxx's were not bad but not as good as the CSC2's and nowhere near as good as the F1's. The main issue was wet weather performance.

Michelin Pilot Preceda PP2's without a doubt. Best tyres I've ever had. Quiet, perform well and excellent wear. Do yourself a favour and just go get them, forget the rest
I used to be indecisive - now I'm just not sure....

What size are your tyres? This post is more objective than subjective, but anyway.

As mentioned, in 2007, Evo did a tyre test using a Golf GTI, the winner being Goodyear's Eagle F1 Asymmetric, which reigns supreme in the minds of most enthusiasts - but in 2008, Auto Express also did a test, again using a Golf GTI. And born was a new winner - the Pirelli P Zero.

Designing tyres is all about trading off performance in one area for a gain in another However, Pirelli has certainly hit on a winning compromise here, as the P Zero starred not only in the wet, but also in the dry. It topped the times on both handling tracks, plus got the honours in curved aquaplaning. No wonder it inspires confidence when the heavens open. A great all-rounder that thoroughly deserves a place on your car.
The result was the same for AutoZeitung, (a leading German motoring magazine), using a Golf GT. Again, the P Zero was the winner.

I've tried searching for the full review, but all I managed to find was this page. Anyone else find anything?

Yeah those CSC2's are notorious for that

In regards to the P Zero tires, there's quite a few different P Zero variations? Like the P Zero Nero and P Zero Rosso, what are the differences between them?

Also need to watch out for country of manufacturer. I think it may have been the Goodyear F1 GSD3 or similar that won some tyre tests with tyres made in Germany, soon after the tyres sold here were made in Australa and were not as good and after that made in China and worse again.

Plus there's date of manufacture, stores like st george tyres (they also sell on ebay) will sell what look like expensive tyres cheap but they can be years old and even poor performing winter editions (USA spec tyres) that were never sold here.

Sweet, thanks for the replies gents.

I had my money on Potenza's, but now i guess il be looking into Eagle F1 or the Pirrellis...

How can you tell who sells tyres made from Germany or China? I'd be feeling pretty annoyed if i find out i payed top dollar for something that i thought was made in Germany, but was really made in China...

P zero rosso on the front only, due to a puncture. I wasn't impressed by the CSC 2s especially when the replacement price was so high.

The Rosso seems to be offer more grip and to be a bit better in the wet plus they are 2/3 of the price.

The F1 Assyms are all made in Germany AFAIK, on mine it's stamped on the sides. You can ask the tyre shop to confirm before fitting and also check the date code on the side, if they get the stock in (which they generally need to do as they only keep standard sizes/tyres in stock) often this is fairly fresh.

Buying from the places like I listed above is where they might grey import from other countries (like the USA spec winter tyre) and these are hard to spot as they might have one extra marking that doesn't make it obvious.

I'd also expect counterfeit tyres to start appearing soon if they haven't already now that China is starting to manufacture more tyres.

Just reading up about on the Pirelli website, Neros sizes start from 16s - 18s, while Rossos start from 19s up..

Can anyone suggest any decent tyres for the standard Mk5 tyres ie 195/65R15. I've looked at pirelli, goodyear, bridgestone and it seems like you can only get 'comfort' tyres in that size. I'm not after super high performance, just something that won't spin in second gear in the wet like the current tyres.
