Check the Varta website, they list two batteries for the Golf. The better battery is only a few dollars more. They are generally the OEM battery supplier and should be what you have under the bonnet.

Not sure if they have batteries for the Mark V, the choice is a little limited. You can buy through your VW dealer but that will be more expensive (worth checking however) and the other option is that you may have a place like batteryworld or similar up there they specialise in batteries but they can be expensive as well.

The dimensions of the battery I just listed are 242mm (L) x 175mm (W) x 190mm (H) and ~18kg.

This might help you find an alternative unit but given where you're located and depending on the urgency the VW spare parts desk might be the place to go, try and hit them up for a discount.

Don't forget that this is covered by warranty if your car is less then 3 years old.

Both generic brands you suggested are good choice, I never got good run with Varta battery, choose battery with more plates and AGM type.

My Farta failed just after 3y, got Excide maintenance free and that feature I don't like, but could not get Bosch or Century to fit.

3 years you've done well.
I don't see any problem with the maintenance free battery it should have water/gas separation area which allows only gas escape from the battery, so there is no need to top up with distilled water. My Varta in T5 lasted just 2y (was not maintenance free and was regularly checked/toped up), was replaced under the warranty by dealer.

Exide seem good, to me.
I had a Merc with a vartara battery. Absolute crap, mercedes would not replace it even when it failed. I fitted an Exide, double the cca and at a fraction of the cost.
A big improvment in starting and cars electrics (even over new).

Now I have a VW, same crappy battery. 3 months after new, a flatt battery. These batterys also do not recharge as well as you'r more conventional battery. Just try to trickle charge one of these batterys, time it and see how it compairs to a more conventional brand. till you reach full charge.

Go for a battery with highest cca rating, followed by a high reserve value and affordable replacment cost (assuming it fits). There are also some exelent batterys called OPTIMA. Very expensive and very good, unfortunatly only a couple of sizes. But for a fraction of Optima's cost, a conventinal branded battery will only be a very small percentage less in performance and almost double that of most factory fitted Vartara batterys.

Maybe the times have changed, maybe it is that I use CTEK charger very often , but the battery in my T5 is around 5 years old and is still in top condition as my newly purchased MIDTRONICS MDX650 tester says. I also tested still original battery in our Golf5 TDI and here is the result of the morning test.



Battery was regularly charged (once a month) with CTEK charger.

However, the replacement battery, will be the Century battery, because I stock them now.
