What a pest you have to go back. It could be worse. A replacement mirror should be an easy fix but it's a shame they stuffed you around (hopefully inadvertantly of course).

ok so here's the juice...
i got in the car last night, put my finger over the light sensor (waited about 5-6, maybe 10secs) and walla! it workd.
however on the way home in traffic it wasn't operating to well, if at all. i placed my finger over the sensor at various times just to make sure it wasn't my imagination. everytime i did this there was a significant dim in the mirror.
anyways, it occured to me that perhaps the shine of the oncoming lights "tricked" the mirror into thinking it's day time and therefore would not dim. when i'm out driving in the country this is never a problem and the mirror operates as it should...
it's a theory. not too sure if i'm on to anything... but i'll leave the stealer alone, for now
thanks all for ur help'81 Sigma| Sports Steering Wheel| Rust

i know in my mirror, even during the day time, it would sometimes dim. maybe your light sensor needs to be recalibrated?

hmmm maybe the mirror does require a recalibration? i would assume this would be a vagcom thing?'81 Sigma| Sports Steering Wheel| Rust

Yes oncoming headlights do affect the dimming of your rear view mirror.
