What a pest you have to go back. It could be worse. A replacement mirror should be an easy fix but it's a shame they stuffed you around (hopefully inadvertantly of course).

Long story short, i was told that the Golf GT TSI did NOT have the auto dimming feature enabled??? is this true? or just a fob off?

      Thanks in advance.
Maybe the dealer just got confused with auto-dipping side mirror on reverse

WARRANTY JOB! Don't pay a cent.

While it's an easy swap etc.. They'll probably take a month to get the part in

            ok so here's the juice...

i got in the car last night, put my finger over the light sensor (waited about 5-6, maybe 10secs) and walla! it workd.

however on the way home in traffic it wasn't operating to well, if at all. i placed my finger over the sensor at various times just to make sure it wasn't my imagination. everytime i did this there was a significant dim in the mirror.

anyways, it occured to me that perhaps the shine of the oncoming lights "tricked" the mirror into thinking it's day time and therefore would not dim. when i'm out driving in the country this is never a problem and the mirror operates as it should...

it's a theory. not too sure if i'm on to anything... but i'll leave the stealer alone, for now

            thanks all for ur help

if its at night time, and your auto-headlights have been engaged, it is dark enough for the auto-dimming to work. oncoming headlights would not "trick" the mirror into thinking it is bright enough i would think. that theory would also cause your headlights to turn off from oncoming headlights.

i know in my mirror, even during the day time, it would sometimes dim. maybe your light sensor needs to be recalibrated?

ah! so the light sensor on the mirror and the auto headlights are the same?

hmmm maybe the mirror does require a recalibration? i would assume this would be a vagcom thing?

No they are not the same sensor.
Yes oncoming headlights do affect the dimming of your rear view mirror.

Frankly I wouldn't he settling for this, I drive around at night enough to see my mirror in full action and regardless of whether I'm on the highway or on a country road, it works the same.

As Logzy pointed out the sensor on the back of the mirror is what it uses to detect daytime/nighttime operation but it also has a connection to the lighting circuit to work out when the lights are on. And I have to check this but when you put the car into reverse if the mirror is dimmed it will undim OR the power light goes off (doing the same thing).
