DionM, sounds like you need to go for weekend drives a bit more or don't need the car! But if you're worried about resale then dont worry .

Just clocked 55,000kms.

Agreed end of three year lease kms - 105,000kms, Agreed end of lease purchase price - $16,000 plus GST.

I got my Jetta Xmas 2007, and have just done 15,000 km.

Trouble is I catch train to work every day, so drive a massive amount of k's. Most of my driving is to the gym and back, and to soccer.

If I was sensible, and caught the (1) quicker and (2) cheaper bus to work every day (from a bus stop only 10 houses to my right) instead of driving every-so-often, I would have done only about 4000 since last May.

As it is, its now up to 19k

No regrets.

Thats what i love about leases, it basically forces you to drive (has to be one of the worst govt policies - hey drive your car more, pollute more and we will lower the FBT you pay)

Yeah, I've been there too, mate (the F3 from Normanhurst in northern Sydney to Beresfield just north-west of Newcastle is full of FBT cars during March, racking up those extra kms to get over the 25,000km annualised threshold).

However, as I wanted to keep this car, I've decided not to run it into the ground (the extra 'cost' over two years is about 10% of the purchase price of the car, but I end up with a car with about 20,000km less on the clock... probably a fair swap).

I hate to impose, but as you're a bit of an expert in the tax field, would you mind setting out the FBT concessions that apply when salary packaging an MV and the pros and cons of doing it?

Has the position changed since the 2009 Budget (tonight)?
