    • All i'm saying is that the RNS-510 is worth the extra first time around if you know what i mean.

If i didn't need NAV then the new RCD touch screens are very nice too.

Yep, I also like the fact that the RCD510's can support 32GB SD cards, the RNS510 can support up to 2GB

SD is only good for mp3 = 320kbps. An MDI iPod interface is much better as it supports Apple lossless and gapless playback.

          • maybe so, but lets be honest here.

unless you have spend a truck load on the stereo system, the difference between 320k mp3 and say something like flac
(or other so called lossless codecs) is minimal in a car, and even more so once moving, and road / wind noise joins the mix.

196k mp3 is what i use for most stuff. it's more than adequate (imho) in a stock system.

Jason, whilst that is true about stock systems. G-rig and I have spent a fair bit on our systems and it is definitely visible the difference between a 210/196/128k. I have now started converting the majority of my music to Apple Lossless and it is MUCH MUCH better.

There is nothing 'so called' about FLAC or Apple Lossless. I doubt you would be able to pick the difference in an ABX test against WAV.

I agree about stock systems, but most people aren't basing the sound improvements on a stock standard system in this thread. There are other upgrades that improve the sound and worthwhile.

The other point that is to be considered is your system is only as good as the weakest link and compressed music doesn't really help. I'd go for 320kbps VBR if you keen on MP3..

I know what you mean about the listening environment but i can still tell a difference and once you got some sound deadening you still know what sounds good or crap.

                • i know what a good system can sound like, having had a 6k system in my previous car. had all panels dynamatted, and sealed air tight.

was running alpine HU and MB splits, and a pair of earthquake 12" subs
but those days are long gone now..... hearing loss will tend to make you change the way you listen to music i guess.....

all im looking for with this system is a little cleaner sound.
thinking about upgrading to the factory amp, and dynaudio speakers, and adding a small (8") sub.

                  that's where it will stop.

and, i love flac (for use on my home PC), but the file sizes are killer.
i only have a 16gb SDHC card, and even at 196k, it only has about 300mb free.

maybe once the 32gb SDHC cards get a little cheaper, 320k might be an option. right now, it's not feasible for me.

                  • I agree with you there, hard to maintain sound system upgrades in every car and it's already cost a lot of time, money and effort. Although worth doing once, but would be nice to do mild or good value upgrades next time.

However, it's hard to choose only one component to upgrade which is why some people say 'different head unit' as it can give you a bit more power and better source (plus maybe ipod/bluetooth).

You just have to accept that you wont get the most out of the Dyn's but you could always take it to the next level in a year or two if you still want more.

Also a FLAC/Foobar fan so not trying to disagree. There is a bit of BS in home and car audio, and headphone setups will still sound the best IMO.

getting a little off the original topic here, but i used to have a nice pair ok AKG studio headphones years ago. paid like $480 for them back in the early 90's.

those were AMAZING, and probably where i did most of the damage to my hearing too. you could go so loud, that bass beats felt like a kick in the head, and there was zero distortion.

but, i now live with constant ringing in the ears, and it's not fun,i can tell you.
permanent and un curable hearing loss. i wish i had known the consequences of my actions all those years ago

                      • You're right, its a good reminder for people not to turn it up too loud, heaphones can be dangerous as you're isolated from your surroundings (ie other people getting pi$$ed if you turn it up too much), but same could happen in the car i guess.

My aim is always sound quality, not outright loudness. You could damage your hearing with the stock ipod buds if they are too loud. I still want to get an SPL meter so i know the safe limits but pretty concious of it these days.

                        • Pardon?

Seriously though, good advice. And interesting discussion about MP3s etc. I agree about the quality aspect, I try and go as high a rate as I can. Unfortunately practicality of file storage often kicks in...

I ordered newer version of gatway (from given link), replaced it and now it works PERFECTLY!!

                            Thanks a lot!!

It's right up under the dash (behind the instrument cluster from memory).
