  • Update....

i went trolling round a bunch of European wrecking yards this morning.
had no luck finding the correct gateway.
i did find a few that were older than "L" so no good (for this application)

i have ordered the unit from the link in my previous post.
i will post again once it arrives, and is installed.

    • Looking forward to hearing the results.

You have now spent ~ $1400. For another $500 more you could have got the SatNav It's annoying how it all adds up

          Hope you get success too.
You may have had to upgrade the gateway with the RNS 510 anyway.
It seems that any Golf 5 prior to 2008 may have a battery problem after installing the RCD 510.
Its a shame that Volkswagen when they designed the RCD 510 did not think of making the unit to be backward compatible with all Golf 5 ( Or at least make available some sort of retro fix!)
          Look forward to your results.
          Good Luck

RNS 510 started development at the start of the Golf 5 cycle and it's compatible with even 2005 models without any upgraded CAN bus. RCD 510 on the other hand is a much more recent design towards the end of the Mark 5 cycle.

Why would they design something to be backwards compatible? They're in the business of making new cars, not upgrading cars so why would they hold back development and new features just to make parts backwards compatible?

The RCD 510 is designed for upgraded platforms like the Golf Mark 6 so the ability to add this to the Mark 5 is a bonus.

And they do have a retro fix, upgrade the CAN bus controller.

You won't find another car like the ones from VAG for the ability to swap parts between cars and upgrade components not to mention the availability of information on how to do this.

            • yeah, that's my thinking too.

any golf 5 from 08 on, can install the RCD510 without problems.
from my mega researching on this subject, it seems only those that have done the swap in post 07 cars have had no problems.

the latest gateway fixes the issue.
i too wish they had made it backwards compatible, but VW probably didn't see a need, as they would not be expecting many people to swap the product around.
and there must have been some reason they made changes to the protocol used by the RCD510 ?

im just happy that they didn't mess with the overall shape, and the quadlock wiring design, otherwise the retrofit might not have even been possible at all.

Checked out that site and could not resist. I to ordered that unit and for less than $160.00AU delivered (Version S) saw the value.( In Australia the best quote I got from the Dealer was $320.00 and they are selling the superseded version Q)
                Thanks for the tip!
                I hope this works
Let me know how you go!

                • So does anyone know if DeanCorp has ended up installing his RNS510 without problems? Last I hear he recieved it and was going to do the install but then nothing.

Also - if you get something like the RNS510 from the Uk will the SatNav work in Australia showing Australian maps?

                    Hi Mate,

Sorry I neglected these forums a bit (I prefer GolfMKV )

                    Here we go.

                    • As you can see, the RNS510 does go in.
No problems at all. Just buy the antenna adaptors and the gps antenna.

As for maps, u will have to "find" a disc with the aus maps.
Once you install the disc, you're good to go.

                      It's the RCD510 that's problematic.
The RNS510 goes in no problems.

                      • I aware of the antenna adapter but whats this about a GPS antenna? I thought that was built into the unit , I wasn't aware of having to get anything else?

DeansCorp - can you advise if you have had any issues with your installation and did manage to get your hands on an Australian Maps DVD?

                        • the GPS antenna is not built in.
most of the units that are for sale on ebay, will come with the antenna.

if you search the www about retrofiting of the RNS510, you will see that most people just sit the antenna ontop of the unit,
and it seems to work fine in this spot.

as for the maps, these are not that hard to find.
i don't have them (didn't need them for my unit) but im sure a bit of searching round the usual sites should turn something up.

Is that including fitting? I got mine from Stu and the dealer fit it for a couple of hundred bucks. I think it cost $800. The only disadv was Harding will give a warrantee on the unit whereas buying from Stu I don't think it does.

have not received the unit yet, it was only posted just over a week ago.
hopefully it turns up this week.
as for getting it installed, im still looking for someone that can do that.

i have been given a contact number for someone that can supposedly do the installation / coding, but have not rung him yet.
will wait till it turns up before i contact him.

hopefully it doesn't cost too much for the installation.
i will keep this thread updated when it does turn up, and once it's installed, i will post f it was successful in solving the drain.
