How did you go? Hope it was a success. Did you check the voltage draw at the battery when key was removed from car and if so can you remember how many amps the car was using.

      Hi all,

My friend got the RCD510 installed in his 06 GTI today and it looks to be working with the help of a relay.
      1) Before the installation, the AMP reading was about 0.06A
      2) After the installation, the AMP reading was about 2A

The installer then installed a relay (I think he used the power from the cigarette lighter), took another reading and the AMP reading was about 0.06A. Like 85turbo said, once you pulled out the key, the radio cannot be turned on. I don't have the specifics sorry, maybe 85turbo will be able to provide more details from his installation.
Anyway, my friend was thrilled that it worked and it definitely does look better than his RCD300.
For anyone in the same situation, this solution works.

      Cheers!

Yes, i can agree that it does work.

the RCD510 is in, and it works as expected.
measured the draw with the rcd300, and it was 0.640A (640 milli amps).
with the RCD510 in place it was 1.8A (as expected).

after the relay install, with the RCD510 installed, and turned off, the draw was back to the previous reading of 0.640A)

i will post pictures and details of what to do tomorrow.
there is one down side to the relay solution, though i have a fix planed for that.

        stay tuned....
pics and details will be up on Sunday, and more info on the "down side"
        and the proposed fix.

overall, im happy with today's results.

        Jason.

Congratulations to you both for getting the units to work and solving the battery drain problem. Orix did your friend have a VW/Parrot bluetooth kit installed and does the phone stayed paired to the unit when the key is reinserted in the ignition. 85turbo you may have found that the rotating button on the left side of the steering wheel (Scrolling from AM to FM to CD to CD Changer if you have one) does not work.
Personaly when I briefly had my unit in (2 Weeks /2 batteries) it did not bother me as I hardly used that function.
Be interested in your other problem that you have come across.
          Regards and Well done!

            Thanks.

Yeah, the mode button no longer works, but I can live with that.
The volume, mute, & next / previous buttons all still work as normal.

I'm about to go outside and take a few pictures then I'll be
            Back with more shortly.

            Jason.

Could please let me know of the type of relay (Brand and Model no) and where you located the relay.IE in engine bay or behind radio before power wire plugs in radio (in wiring harness)
              Thanks

                Hi Cathmic,

My friend does not have a VW or parrot bluetooth kit installed so I won't be able to help you there. Sorry.

                Cheers!

give me about 1 hr, and the pics will be up.
all wiring was done under the hood, no need to remove the radio at all.

and standard automotive relay will do, as you are only switching about 10A.
most relays are rated at 30A.

                  Jason.

                    ok, here goes.

firstly, i will give a disclaimer.
this info is provided only for your interest. i will take ZERO responsibility if you choose to copy this, and stuff something up in the process.

you will need the following things.

                    1 any standard automotive relay.

2 about 60cm of 7 core trailer flex (or other suitable wire)
i chose the flex, as it keeps the install looking neat and tidy.

3 a bunch of spade type connectors and a good quality crimp tool.

i doubled up on a few of the connections just for extra current carrying ability.

pin 30 on the relay is connected to a fuse holder with a 15A fuse in line with pin F54 in the factory fuse box under the hood.
the new 15A fuse is now the radio fuse.

pin 87 on the relay is connected to the car side of pin F19 in the factory fuse box.

pin 86 on the relay is connected to chassis ground (or to the battery negative)

pin 85 on the relay is connected to pin F29 in the factory fuse box.

the wire colors used in my setup in the pictures are as follows.

pin 30 on relay = red/yellow = constant battery power from pin F54 through 15A fuse.

pin 86 on relay = black = Ground

                    pin 87 on relay = white/brown = car side of pin F19

pin 85 on relay = blue. = ignition switched feed at pin F29

here are the pictures that will hopefully clear it up a little more.
all the changes have been done under the hood, no need to remove the radio at all.
also, no factory wiring has been cut, and all can be returned to stock in a few seconds if required.

there is one down side to this modification.

the radio will do a "cold start" every time you turn the ignition on.
this means that it will scan the cd trays each time the ignition is turned on.
also it forgets the SD card scan, so the first time you access the SD card each time you start the car takes longer than it should.

i am working on a fix for this small issue, and hopefully ill have a solution soon.

                    any questions ?

please note, that i see this as a TEMPORARY solution, until i can find a more permanent fix.
this looks likely to involve a CANBUS upgrade.

                    Jason.

Are you looking at replacing the CAN-GATEWAY?
If so try this site and type in the part number :- www.vwpartsdepot.net

                      • it's looking likely (the canbus replacement).
i have another idea that i want to try first but.

if i can find someone that knows all about how the canbus gateway works.
i need more info before i attempt it.

that place has good prices, too !
thanks for the link. the "L" version of the gateway, would be about $220 delivered. not bad.

but then ill need to get it fitted, and coded......
(if my plan B doesn't work out)

i will keep this thread updated.

                          • There is finally a solution in sight....

I have had confirmation from another MK5 owner that a gateway upgrade solves the power drain problem.
it seems as though the older gateway in my car, can not be coded for the RCD510, and that's where the problem stems from.

He upgraded to the latest version (part # 1k0 907 530 S) and once installed and coded for the RCD510, the problem went away.

The cheapest i have found the unit (new) at is 1K0 907 530 S
and it works out at about $200 delivered to Sydney. (74 euro + delivery)

The above seller has a good reputation from other buyers, so im not worried about the fact that he is in the Czech republic.
also, i have had nice quick responses to my emails so far (in English too)

I am going hunting through a few wrecking yards this weekend (to see if i can find one cheaper)
if not, ill be ordering the unit from the above link on Monday.

Then all i have to do is find someone to install and code it.

                            Jason.

That's good news. Can I ask if the cost is in USD or AUD?

                              Thanks!

                              • it's AU$.

convert the 74 euro figure at XE.com.
that will give you an idea of the price for the unit.

shipping is minimal, as it's so small.
