I never get mine to sit on the first go.. I normally have to place it very carefully (same on the 'rent's VW as well). So I normally spare the embarrasment - especially at a mega busy service station - and dangle it on the other side of the flap..

I was told off once about it, but I never understood why and the guy that did so couldnt give me a good reason except to say you should be standing there whilst it fills, the bowsers in NZ have a locking mechanism so you can fill your car up and wash your windscreen, check the oil and the like.

I have not seen one petrol station in victoria with this, the holes and mountings are there but they have been deliberately pulled out.

It's because Australian's are stupid so we loose little "extras" like this which just about every other country has. The locking nozzles haven't been around for ~10 years, I can't remember exactly when they started disappearing.

The main problem is that you get people getting in and out of their car wearing synthetic fibres and creating static electricity. But rather then educate people that this is the _REAL_ problem they instead ban things like the locking nozzle, mobile phones and so on. The problem of static is still there but it happens less because you have to hold the nozzle.

Just like mobile phone usage which has never been a concern but came about because of stupid people and knee jerk reactions. The myth has been debunked in hundreds of studies and there has never been a fire at a service station started by the usage of a mobile phone.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) study looked at 243 fires at service stations around the world and found none were caused by mobile phones.

ATSB acting director Joe Motha says static electricity discharged by people's bodies has been found to be the most common cause of the fires.

"Usually in the case of a motorist at a service station the static build-up could be caused by contact with the seat of the car ... or any part of the interior of the vehicle," he said.

Mr Motha says fears of mobiles bursting into flames at the petrol bowser were only ever an "urban myth".

"The concerns were basically based on hoaxes that were circulating on the Internet," he said.

However, fuel companies and service station operators remain cautious.

Tony Selmes, who represents the Service Station Operators of Queensland organisation, remains cautious and says it is unlikely warnings will be removed.

Mr Selmes is also executive director of the Motor Trades Association of Queensland and represents Australia's retail motor industry on the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council (NMVTRC) as the nominee of the Motor Trades Association of Australia.

"I still wouldn't feel comfortable about using a phone on a driveway anyway because it has been ingrained into me," he said.

Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association spokesman Randal Markey says the new report backs the findings of other studies.

Good riddance I say! I'm all for segregation of petrol or diesel because you diesel users are nothing but pigs . Surely you can learn to contain the diesel and keep it in the fuel tank rather then getting it all over the ground making it slippery and all over the handle of the nozzle.

Anyhow one of the benefits of diesel is that you don't have to fill up as often so it all evens out in the end!

I swear I've never spilled a drop. Must have been a sloppy 4x4 driver.

I saw this truck driver (small delivery truck) and he was filling the truck without looking and it pissed all over the area around the pump and he just put the nozzle back (which was dripping wet) and walked through the diesel into the store. I've seen other trucks do the same thing and I assume it's when they have a fuel card so they don't care.

The few times I've had to fill up a diesel loan car I've ended up with the crap all over the bottom of my shoes and all over my hands. Why can't they have disposable gloves for when you fill up with diesel? Jaguar has a dispenser built into their diesel cars so you don't get your hands dirty/oily!

Ahh ya big b!tch! I remember having more trouble NOT spilling it al over my car and the ground when I had my old PETROL Bora.. It would always flow out heaps... No matter how hard I shook!

I've only had a problem with the diesel when I first got it.. Didn't know there was such thing as "High-Flow" and "Normal" so naturally I tried the high flow and it squirted right back at me..

Now, I use the regular nozzles, I shake before pulling out (lol) and have never spilt a drop! And plus.. At least we only have one type of oil (excluding Ultimate). You guys have to choose between Regular, Premium, Super, Super Dooper or Jet Fuel

                  Quite right, mav.
Here's an example of static electricity at work at the bowser.

The woman (wearing a woollen jumper) exits the car charged up to the wazoo and suddenly earths herself when she grabs the nozzle.
                  ZAP, WOOF.

A good reason why lock-off pumps were phased out (after the advent of self service).

Here's another one, this one is good because the SUV burns to the ground and lots of flame

Hence why you fill fuel containers on the ground not in the back of your car/suv.

Of course we get back to the problem because no-one really knows about the real danger at service stations and think it's only mobile phones that cause fires.

I don't think it had anything to do with self service because that had been around for many years before the banning of locking nozzles (probably 15 or more) although you did get the stupid people that would fill up using the click off, not remove the nozzle and drive off. I think that you have to hang up the nozzle before you pay now or it's indicated on the operators console.

I'd have to say that I fill up all the time, in business attire, flash shoes, white shirts etc, and a little diesel from the pump on your hands is just such a non event. Then again, I'm not a sensitive new age wuss either.

I'd PAY to see you at the diesel bowser with your plastic gloves on when a work ute full of blokes shows up behind you. Quality entertainment right there.

I do have to give you your man cards back though Mav, that SUV burning to the ground is just awesome. One less.

I jiggle it a bit and pull it out slowly whilst tilting backwards, so far I haven't dropped a single drop.
