I'm pretty sure the 'POP' you hear is the Dump Valve (blow off) and is unique to the turbo... eg Get The GTI! if your currently looking and can move on the budget a little bit the pirelli's aren't selling so you can get a REALLY good deal on one, eg <50k drive away with extras...
The DV is totally plumbed back, and you're unlikely to hear much of it.
The popping on downshifts/overrun is due to unburned fuel making it out of the combustion chambers IIRC.
To me the noise is more like what a car makes when it hits the rev limiter. It sounds as if the computer is holding the engine at certain revs when it changes
