Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • R32 and GTI DSG

    Hi All,

This is my first post so I better briefly introduce myself. I am Matt and I in the process of deciding between a second hand R32 or an optioned up GTI DSG.

I regretfully sold my 2001 Mini Cooper S and due to family changes need to get a 5 door hatch and the Golf is a perfect fit.
Personally I prefer the look of the Mark V GTI so that is the shape I am after.
I haven't driven a R32 yet but from what I have been reading here on the forums the sound is to die for. I do have one question though; does it make the same popping noise on gear change or is that just something the GTI has. I absolutely love that sound!

I know everyone also asks which is better so I thought i would ask a different question. For the people here who have purchased a GTI or R32, apart from cost was there another reason you chose one over the other?

the GTI is a like a hot blonde bikini babe and the R32 is like her yummy mummy.

Both awesome machines that are great fun to take for a spin around the block. I chose the GTI because I found it a bit more fun to drive. It will grab for traction and it will squirm about and just generally feels a bit more alive.

The R32 noise is very addictive though and more sure footed.

Just depends on what kind of drive you are looking for.

I initially had my heart set on the GTI as well, but after driven the R32 - was totally sold on it. Yes, its not as quick as the GTI, and yes it is not as fuel efficient, but with the R32, all wheel drive traction and that sonorous exhaust note just got me - plus bixenons, leather, 18" wheels, etc....

The difference in price between the two in the second hand market - given the same year, mileage, options (excluding the standard stuff that's in the R32) would be around $10K, so its all down to personal preference and how much you can afford to spend....

My pref for the R32 was down to the 4 motion (4wd), larger brakes and that 3.2 6 cylinder
And you do get that muted pop too...

GTI DSG for mine you can trick the SH#T out of it and its alot lighter, won

numerous awards just like the R32around the world. If you want a deeper more sporty

exhaust note get a apr rsc full exhaust that will definately quinch your

          thirst!!

All the best with your decision mate

          cheers

Performance (no mods) between the 2 vehicles is similar. As described previously, under hard acceleration, the GTI squirms and wriggles like a nubile nymphomaniac. The R32 on the other hand is sure footed, stable, daring you to give it more, like Stifler's mum.

The noise....well, if you like the turbo symphony you will want the GTI. If it's that V6 growl (with the flapper mod), then you simply cannot go past, nor will you ever tire of that sweet melody.

Apart from that....if Blue is your preferred colour...it's da R32. If red is your passion then a GTI it has to be (although there are 6 red R32's in OZ, all DSG and no other factory fitted options). Both variants have other colours, but the ones I have commented on are unique to each model.

Fuel economy in the R can be quite lethal if you drive in "S" mode all the time. Driven sedately, but without compromise, we can achieve less than 8l/100km in Freeway/local traffic. The GTI will return better economy...but as others have proved, over a 12 month period, this may only amount to $200 or so cheaper.

            Good luck...(go for the .:R)

I'm pretty sure the 'POP' you hear is the Dump Valve (blow off) and is unique to the turbo... eg Get The GTI! if your currently looking and can move on the budget a little bit the pirelli's aren't selling so you can get a REALLY good deal on one, eg <50k drive away with extras...

The pop is the car burning excess fuel off, it's not a WRX with a ricer BOV!

A lot of NA cars give popping noises on overrun with a bigger exhaust. I love that sound, sounds like a baby race car

BOVs, not a fan... maybe when a car was NA and converted to turbo, and its very subtle... maybe! otherwise no thanks!

GolfMkV a guy is selling a 1 year old R32 and is getting despeate for a sale as he is moving OS. Looks like a nice car. Should be able to negotiate a little on the price? Currently $47999 IIRC?

Open face in a car = more peripherial vision... the closed ones restrict you and you feel like you have a helmet on all the time... not very comfortable. The open face ones, since you already have a windscreen, mean you can see more to the sides and downwards, breath easier, put sunnies on /...

Not on the R32, just the exh noise with fuel shut off.
