  • Incompetence and lack of customer service from dealer

I purchased a brand new Golf 2.0 TDI from South Yarra VW in March 2007. When I have had the car serviced or repaired (at South Yarra or other VW dealers), I have noticed that the purchase date for the vehicle listed in the VW computer system is October 2006, not March 2007. Therefore, as far as VW is concerned, my warranty will expire less than 3 years after I purchased the vehicle.

I spoke to the service manager at South Yarra VW when I first noticed this discrepancy shortly after I purchased the vehicle and was told that an error had been made in data entry and that this error would be rectified. Two years later, it still hasn't been fixed.

I recently sent several e-mails to both service and sales e-mail addresses at South Yarra VW asking again for their mistake to be fixed and for somebody to call me with an update, but these requests have been totally ignored.

What should I do next, if South Yarra VW don't seem to be interested in looking after their customers?

The purchase date is the date on which the car was first registered. If the car was new when you purchased it then the day it was first registered by the dealer is when the warranty runs from (generally a day or two before you picked up the car).

If the car was registered earlier for demo reasons then this is the date. Are you mixing up the build date with the date delivered?

Try picking up the phone and calling them, rather than email?

You could just sue VW AUST if they rejected the warranty within the period of 3 years that runs from your purchase date. Which you could verify from bank transfer records etc.

Assuming the car was new not a demo, then the warranty commences from date of purchase not the date in their system. I would be talking to the dealer service department about it if you are certain that the purchased date is incorrect, but don't get too stressed.

If it gets to the point of the dealer saying the car is out of warranty and you produce your documentation that the car was purchased at a later date, you will be covered by warranty. At this point the dealer will be forced to rectify their error.

              Cheers

Typical lawyer talk! The warranty runs from the date of first registration which he has proof of, he also has proof of when he purchased the car. There's no need to bring in lawyers and sue for what could be a data entry mistake as VW will cover the warranty as per the terms and conditions of the warranty which is 3 years from the time of first registration (plus a small extra bit to cover the period between registration and pickup for new cars.
