    i dont get rattles.

and the only ones i do get is due to the crappy factory speakers not being able to produce good bass.

only had 1 warranty claim in 3 months and they replaced the item no problems.

if youre going to clock a lot of kms in peak hour, get the DSG. if you have the extra bit of coin (which isnt too much these days) get the pirelli.

its a much better platform to start with and will keep you slightly separated from the thousands of other GTIs out there. (plus DSG owns manual by far! )

the car's reliable, as are most new cars. start modding it and things could change, again like most cars.

quality wise, there is no comparison between jap and euro cars. (this is my second euro car amongst a swagga of jdms) and the euro cars are always better built and harder to DIY.

    just my opinion.

well took a black manual for a test drive yesterday. Very nice, as you guys all know... comfortable, quite quick , nimble etc etc....

now if I can sort of my work contract - bring it on!

Might be a little bit quicker at gear changing while it's still working OK, but once you start getting problems I hope you've got plenty of cash to pay the repair bill

Yeah I didnt enjoy the DSG. Dont care if its quicker, manual is so much more fun to drive... find the DSG uninvolving...

Good choice, I love manuals, I've never been a big fan of automatics or anything that resembles an automatic (such as a DSG)

Thats so true. I agree with this 100%

Great to have the DSG when under warranty, but I reckon in 5-10 years time there will be a lot of Golfs kicking around with knackered DSG boxes.

You guys sound like a couple of old guys sitting on the porch talking about <insert any product here like automatic transmission, cars, the wheel, the mobile phone etc>

DSG is the future, manuals and autos are on the way out. You have to move with the times gentlemen

lol your no doubt correct, considering a lot of cars only offer DSG now and not a standard manual. e.g. lancer ralliart, and passat r36...

I am sure if I drove one for longer, and got used to it, I would start to enjoy it more; but as it stands, I think you have so much more fun, and control with the clutch...and its that part of the manual I like..

by the way im under 30!!! haha

Ok Mav, I'll remember that when I drive past your place in the future in the old manual GT TDI Don't worry I'll be sure and give you a wave
By the way I didn't say there's anything wrong with the concept of a DSG transmission, just that you'll need to have a healthy bank balance to recondition when it once it's worn out

dont care what ya'll think, DSG owns, and yes it is the way of the future.

nothing like flappin the paddles round the twisty bits, or lunchin a manual gti (hehe) of the lights, then have the luxury of flipping it into auto during the peak hour crawl home.

id say so far they're reliable. i havent heard of many (if any) blown dsg boxes. sure get the mechatronic replaced, but thats what warranties are for.

theyre about as reliable as new brand new component on a car, ie electronic diffs, super-turbo engines, halidex controllers etc etc etc

I have to agree with you that automatics and manuals are on the way out. Yet I still bought a manual, simply because I preferred driving it to the DSG.

                        Slightly OT:
Yet still knowing technology and where the car industry is headed with electric motors, I feel that the DSG, while great now, will look outdated in the next decade or so due to the torque bands of electric motors. I expect it would go to single speed or maybe two speed transmissions.

Oh well, if I can't buy a manual, I'll just have to oxy a couple of holes in the floor pan for the feet and start on a strong dose of steroids to build up the 'ol leg muscles

Any idea of how much the DSG clutches will be to replace, and when they might need to be done?

PS i was always an 'if its not a manual its not a car' until I drove the DSG GTI. It just makes sense. It has none of the drawbacks of an auto (lack of connection to engine etc) or a manual (slow or missed shifts).

I'm well over 30 and I bought a manual for the same reason. I like the feeling of control. I have driven the DSG. Very impressive, very smooth, but with a box as slick as the 6MT, I just don't need the auto features.

Might be a different story if I got stuck on some of the major roads around Sydney in peak hour, but I choose to run the back streets instead as it's more fun, and is quicker as well.

                              Manual all the way.

This is true but doesnt mean there isnt going to be a hell of a lot of stuffed DSG boxes around in a few years time from the earlier GTI's/TDI's. However, the price of a replacement should be more reasonable with the huge uptake of the technology. They will probably get more and more reliable as time goes on(ironing out faults/problems). The Audi TT's which were the first to get the technology had heaps of trouble with them, I think GTI's were the next? mine is still going nicely after 105,000kms and nearly 4 years although when the extended warranty runs out I'll be moving on to something else, probably an R20 with DSG.
