Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I bought some Castrol Edge Sport 5W-30 recently. Is this still on the recommended list?

          Castrol Edge Sport 0W-40?

This is Castrol’s best , full synthetic, low viscosity technology. Castrol EDGE Sport 0W-40 is recommended for modern and high revving technology engines in performance sports cars, luxury sedans and turbo-diesels.

            Here we go again!

Here are the latest VW specs:

In short, either Castrol Edge 5-30 or 0-40 can be used. In Australia, you can use any oil on either of these lists in the 2.0TFSI engine, as we have timed service intervals (502.00) with the option to use the long life oils (504.00).

Looking closely at the pic, it looks like he has used a 1 1/2" socket, close enough to 38mm (actually 38.1 mm)

Some say they have 36mm while others say 38mm. Seems there may be two different sizes.

Just checked under my car (2007 GTI). I have a 36mm socket which fits perfectly. This leads to one of two conclusions. Either there are two sizes, or the 1 1/2" (38mm) socket is a fairly loose fit?

To pre-empt the next question, I don't remember where I got the 36mm socket from, I've had it for years. It's sidchrome & not part of a set. Maybe it came from Coventry's?

Yeah I've been trying to hunt one down. Not easy eh, they're huge.

And I'm not paying what snap-on are asking either.

                      Its 36mm.
Kincrome do one. Should be able to get it or order it from most auto parts stores for around $30

                        Try VEK Tools

                        This might work

                        KC Tools do a 36mm & 38mm socket for about $30

Sears have the Craftsman brand (excellant product - poor mans snap-On) for about USD7

                        This site might help

                          Interesting article for DIY.
Warning! Extremly boring. It's all about maintenance.

As a frequent instructor and consultant to major companies, I'm constantly amazed by the number of times I hear experienced maintenance professionals extol the virtues of "just change oil" to solve...
