If you, say, drop a glass bottle next to your cars rear bumper and the glass shatters into millions of tiny pieces, those pieces aren't going to say "Hey look! theres a black strip! lets aim for that instead of the paintjob on this jetta"

The only way that I can see that the dealer was even being vaguely true is if the black strip on the bumper is facing directly upwards, and you drop something directly on the black strip.....

And it's not just the turbo model....all jettas have the black strip on the back bumper so I dunno why he just said "turbo model". Dealer sounds like he has absolutely no idea why that is there as well and I reckon he said that to you because lets be honest, if ur a potential buyer, it sounds a hell of a lot better than "I dont know why that black strip is there!"
The way I understood it (which took me about 30mins to get my head around) is that if you drop something off the boot lip/bumper top, the first thing it hits is that black strip - which is why they don't paint it. And I think he said Turbo model because it's mainly Turbo models that have the coded bumpers? Not too sure...

afaik and i haven't done this myself, the dealer i spoke to said that it could be taken off. behind it are a bunch of clips and behind the clips are the wires that lead up to the reverse sensors.

my aim in asking him was to replace it with mesh cos i'm getting mesh for the wrong (won't be doing this i reckon as it sounded like the wiring was going to get in the way or be a hassle or something - he suggested living with it for a while, and if i still didn't like it, to look at painting it chrome instead of going mesh)

so, i'm assuming that based on the info he gave me (after speaking to his parts/service technicians) that you would be able to remove that strip and have that colour coded.
