  • Jetta rear bumper black strip

    Hey guys
Just wondering for those that have the jetta, if you go to the back, you will see a black plastic strip going across above the bumper and just under the reverse sensors. I was wanting to get that color coded. Any idea's if it will pry out and if so, how to go about it?

    Thanks guys

My Jetta's black, so I'm not too concerned about it... anyone know how to keep it black.. i accidentally got some wax on it..

I would imagine it would just pry out, or you could always just mask around it and spray it... shouldnt be too much of a pain to do..

Hi my Jetta is black also I use Mothers' Protectant In Interior / Dash & Trim

Preserves and protects for 30 days! Mothers Protectant is a penetrating UV blocker, effective on rubber, vinyl, plastic and fiberglass. Constructed to recondition and maintain the original condition and appearance of dashboards, bumpers, trim, tires and more. Protectant isn’t an oily surface-coating film. It’s an ozone and smog resisting, UV shielding penetrant – a preservation agent that works on just about any uncoated plastic or rubber.

yeah...I might try prying it out later today. Because I want to colour code it silver like my car, but I don't want to do it myself and I've got a panelshop in mind that can paint it professionally for me. Only downside is if I leave the black strip on my car or it can't be pryed out, I'm gonna hve to leave the car there and I'd rather them just take the black strip than my whole car....

They can match the paint because I have the paint code and for back up if they can't find the codes, they said they'll take my fuel filler cap and match the colour. It's silver, and like clarkson says, "how hard can it be?"

lol I got the info from http://www.carcareproducts.com.au/pr...ers/protectant

I dont have any stone chips on my bumper or bonnet as I have a plastic bonnet protector though I have one on the top of my front RHS panel that I will get repaired when I can be bothered.

How much does it cost to repair the chips?

I dont know havent looked into it yet though if you have quite a few chips it would probably be cheaper to get your bumper resprayed.
I only have the one chip so I would look at getting that repaired if it wasnt too expensive to do so.

I dont know if the strip can just be pryed off. I think its joined to the bottom part of the bumper.

If you buy the rear bumper skirt, this replaces the back strip with a colour coded one.

Let me know how you go, I wouldn't mind color coding mine also.

Good to see so many people have black Jettas on here! I'm one of them.

A dealer once explained to me that that strip is there so if you drop anything it hits that instead of the painted bumper - which is why they keep it black on the Turbo model...

"so if you drop anything it hits that instead of the painted bumper"? lol this sounds like major BS being done by the dealer.....either that or im not reading your post correctly.

If you, say, drop a glass bottle next to your cars rear bumper and the glass shatters into millions of tiny pieces, those pieces aren't going to say "Hey look! theres a black strip! lets aim for that instead of the paintjob on this jetta"

The only way that I can see that the dealer was even being vaguely true is if the black strip on the bumper is facing directly upwards, and you drop something directly on the black strip.....

And it's not just the turbo model....all jettas have the black strip on the back bumper so I dunno why he just said "turbo model". Dealer sounds like he has absolutely no idea why that is there as well and I reckon he said that to you because lets be honest, if ur a potential buyer, it sounds a hell of a lot better than "I dont know why that black strip is there!"

I couldn't picture it either how the (vertical) black strip can protect the paint from a falling object. Unless the dealer was referring to somekind of load sill protector like the one we see at the back of a taxi flapping around at the edge of the boot (above the bumper)?

Btw, there is an optional clear plastic load sill protection film for Jetta.

of course if you view it from behind the car!

I was referring from side view (cross section) of the strip in relation to the rear bumper.
