Depends on your driving but you will spend up to 50% more on fuel. But the R32 is $10K more then the GTI, who really cares about fuel consumption (within reason) when you're spending that much. You want to save money on fuel buy a tractor, the GT TDI fits the bill and you can use it to mow the grass.

My 07 gti, DSG, no mods does the following:

Highway driving: 7.5 - 8.5 kms/100l
City driving: 9.0 - 10.5 kms/100l
"S mode driving: 10.00 - 15.0 kms/100l depending on how long I rag it for.

It's a 200kg heavier car, it has a 6 cylinder and it's AWD, officially it uses ~20% more but it depends on how you drive it. Why worry about fuel though if you're spending $50K+?

If you do 10,000km a year and the difference between two cars is 10l per 100km and 15l per 100km this is $650 per year in fuel.

1000 litres x $1.30 = $1300
1500 litres x $1.30 = $1950

There are too many factors to say what an average is, if you chip either car they will use more fuel and it really does come down to how you drive, what gearbox you choose and where you drive and when.

My MK4 R32 uses about 11.5 to 12L normal driving and im rarely on a freeway. CAI helped a lot, consumption went down almost a litre.
If we have a crise things change dramatically, it goes up to 15-16L/100km but thats not that often so its ok. Its not as bad as it seems

at the moment my GTI is doing nothing but stop start peak hour traffic both to and from work during the week and on the weekend its still urban but its getting flogged. as a result my consumption is around 12l per 100km. thats with Bluefin too.

poor GTI really needs a good country trip to stretch her legs and drop that consumption

My GTI got 6.9 l/100km from Penrith to Brighton le Sands, that's 70/30 highway to Urban. and I did fang it a couple of times. So that's what my MFD says and it usually isn't that far off.

I'm surprised with some GTI drivers about getting figures in the 12s, I only get that if I'm driving on S in the Curvy bits of the Royal National

Only way I can do less than 10L/100km is by driving like a grandma.

Mind you my fuel consumption seems a bit lower with the DSG behaving itself.

I've found sitting on 120km/hr in the wee hours of the morning has me doing genuine sub 7L/100km figures. Strange because it uses a tad over 7L/100km if I sit on 100.

On hot days it absolutely chews through the expensive stuff. I don't consider it unreasonable, although the performance leaves alot to be desirable..very sluggish.

MFD is usually pretty accurate to what I calculate from the petrol bowser (in my case anyway).

Yes but don't say you wouldn't like a snail or a blower under your bonnet as well as the big lump.

Edit: I use a little bit more on average than what Balkanac said most likely due to a slightly heavier right foot. The CAI did make a difference of about 1L/100km less though as well. On long highway journey's I can get the consumption down to about 9-10L/100km. Best I've seen is 8.8L/100km. The MkV has slightly better economy I believe due to slight modifications to exhaust, intakes etc which also is what gives it that slight power gain. But as others have said if you're caring a lot about fuel economy you shouldn't really be looking at a GTI or R32. Have a look at the different GTs for fuel efficiency with a little bit of fun thrown in as well.
