I deliberately bought mine on the sunshine coast, then spent the rest of the day coming home via the mountain ranges, and made it work. I agree high combustion pressure is the key.

Actually did that loop twice in my former V8 on it's first two days, clocked up a rather fun and hilly 500k and it turned out to be a very healthy baby indeed.

    Enjoy!!!
    good point!

    Where to go first!

What rev range do you try and sit in? I am trying to start at around 2000 and go up to around 4000, but not aggressively just easing it up there.

This is my install guide on the http://www.my-gti.com/3/vwskoda-oem-bluetooth-install. I haven't finished it yet but it gives you an idea of now it works. You don't need an RNS-510 but it adds some extra bling to the install, the voice dialing is fantastic and works every time. I paid around $600-650 delivered at the time but it may be a bit more now due to the falling dollar.

There is another kit but I'm not sure I would recommend it.

        Hi Greg,

I'll bet the run in the GT TDI was a lot easier on the pocket than the same run in the Falcon was at the time

Russ, the fuel economy is at each end of the spectrum. All I honestly miss about the Ford was the soundtrack. I'm certainly enjoying flying under the radar these days, and I no longer live at fuel stations. Still owing a big V8 is something I'm glad I did, it's pretty special.

Korb, my philosophy, and there are a bijillion opinions on this, was keeping it floored as much as possible, but changing up early to avoid high revs. High combustion pressures, and thus extra force on the rings happens at open throttle / high demand situations, so I had both cars labouring from low speeds in 2 and 3rd gears up long hills where they couldn't build a lot of speed. Fuel economy was ludicrous, even in the TDI, but it is both legally safe, quiet, and doing what you want to achieve.

In a GTI I'd be avoiding the last 1000 rpm, and making the engine work from down low, and not be scared to floor it. Change up early, to keep the speeds down, the engine labouring, and the rings copping a flogging! Any mountain drive is going to achieve this, so just treat the car as new, let the rubber and brakes, tranny etc bed in, but make sure those rings beg for mercy. It's all over after a few hundred km's, so suffice to say the critical point has already happened in the first hundy, but there's never a bad excuse for a mountain drive now is there!

The cafe at Nebo, beside the post office is just devine as well.
Don't be a sucker and go to the popular one at Glorious, where all the bikes hang out. No comparison on taste.

I agree there's nothing quite like the roar of a well tuned V8, but I also enjoy the effortless torque of the GT TDI when it hits the hills and get even more enjoyment when you get to the bowser, even if you've been giving it some stick Got the best of both world's now
