  • 3 days in - so many questions!

Ok so I have my MY08 GTi with DSG and I am very happy with it!

I have browsed the manual back to back a few times now, and searched through this and other forums, but still have some questions:

    1. Is there only one reversing light, or does this need to be fixed?

    2. Does the VW bottle opener come standard? I didn't get one, should I be annoying the dealer.

    3. I got my windows tinted on Monday, they said I shouldn't open them for at least 3 days, but 7 if possible, I drove out of a car park tonight (4 days passed) and opened all of the windows trying to open my drivers window (always the last one you try!) what should I look for if i have stuffed the tint?

    4. I am looking into getting a bluetooth phone kit installed, does anyone have any experience with the connect2 kit? I have done some searching and found a few things on it.

4-a. www.thecarkitcompany.com.au who fits the connect2 system advised me today that you can't see the phonebook on the MFD, is this the case? if so what is the real difference between the connect2 system and say a blueant system other then atheistic's?

    5. After reading countless "running your car in" type threads I am more or less taking this approach - http://tsx.acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=645938 however, as this is my first car that has any kind of performance at all I can't resist the occasional spirited drive. The manual advises not to use more then 3/4 throttle for the first 1000k is this something that will genuinely affect the engine, or can I be slightly liberal with my go pedal.

    6. My fuel economy seems to be quite high, averaging around 14l/100 is this because I am varying the revs a lot with a new engine, and will this settle down?

If there is a thread with the answer that I have missed feel free to let me know.

    Thanks for all the help!

As mentioned in the manual and as can be seen from the back of the car you have a reverse light and a fog light.

    2. Does the VW bottle opener come standard? I didn't get one, should I be annoying the dealer.
Yes but it's the new plastic surround stainless steel one, get the older much nicer looking and better fitting all stainless unit for around $30.

    The tint will be fine.

    4. I am looking into getting a bluetooth phone kit installed, does anyone have any experience with the connect2 kit? I have done some searching and found a few things on it.
That kit is rubbish, look at the Skoda car kit, it's so so much better.

Run it in as per the manual, don't thrash it but don't baby it. It's your car and if you've spent hard earned money on it then look after it, the engineers that designed the car know how it should be run in. I'd be hesitant at following the advice of those that had their parents buy their car for them and who might suggest you drive it like it's stolen.

    6. My fuel economy seems to be quite high, averaging around 14l/100 is this because I am varying the revs a lot with a new engine, and will this settle down?
Yes, don't worry about the MFD and just enjoy the car.

The fuel consumption will settle down after a while. Mine was high until I hit around 2000kms. It has been improving ever since.

Did you buy it from a VW dealer? If so, they should have explained most of this for you. Your questions have been answered by others but since you mentioned the single reverse light, I would like to comment.

I don't believe we need a reverse fog light and I'm thinking that having a single reverse light could be dangerous especially since its on the left where it's harder for a driver behind to see it when you are trying to reverse parallel park.

Does anyone agree with me on this?

based on my 2 months ownership

          1. yes, no

          2. yes, yes

          3. bubbles perhaps? anywhere that the tint has moved. though i highly doubt theres any damage. vw usually take the door trims off to tint so u shud be safe

          4. no

4a. ive used ant and the one on my gps. for bt try and use voice control is possible. otherwise, start mapping important numbers to quick dials.

          5. some people say yes, some say no. most wont be able to give you an answer based on fact as no one will buy a new car, thrash it since day one, buy another car exactly the same and baby it for the first 1k. dont stress too much and drive it normally but not balls out. the kms will come quickly and the manual i think stipulates 2000 or 2500. cbf getting the manual.

          6. are you looking at the average or the driving for that period? im getting well under 10's and i flog the bejesus out of it.

my advice. with a grain of salt.

            No and Yes.

No - You need a rear (not reverse) fog light to help prevent people running into you from behind when there is poor visibility due to fog. You might not drive in fog very often, but one "save" is enough (or it might help the next owner). I drive on the Hume highway in winter when there is fog reasonably often. I am constantly annoyed by how many people don't slow down to suit the conditions, so having a rear fog light is most definitely a good thing.

Having a single fog light on the right rear is supposed to be able to help people distinguish between a car with fog lights on (one light on one side), vs a car with two bright lights (one light on each side), which could be a car with faulty brake lights.

If you have come around a corner in the fog and suddenly see a car in front of you with two bright lights you have to quickly decide whether it is actually braking (with a faulty high level brake light like so many cars these days), in which case you need to apply your own brakes, FAST; or is it a car with two rear fog lights ?

I believe the consequences of a high speed rear impact is much more dangerous than a low speed reverse parking bingle.

Yes - It would be good to have two reversing lights so you can see either side of your car when reversing at night.

Both my Octy and my Transporter have a single fog light on the right rear, plus two reversing lights (one each side). In the case of the Golf I think it was a styling and cost decision to have only one of each.

tint will be fine, if you're super worried just have a look that it hasnt moved (the edges of the tint are still in line with the edges of the windscreen). get the bottle opener from the dealer the car is supposed to come with one. those are the only questions i can answer

I agree with others on the tint. I have always been told by the window tint people that 48 hours is all that is needed before you can wind windows up and down, unless the conditions are extremely humid and then it is preferred to leave them a little longer. I think yours should be fine. As Mischa said check the edges and make sure they haven't started to lift anywhere.

You should definitely have received the bottle opener with the car so push the dealer for that.

As others have said also the MFD reading for fuel consumption is not really accurate so don't panic about figures it displays, it will also depend on what sort of driving you're doing, if I'm driving in stop start traffic mine usually registers 14 to 15 L per 100 or so as well but once out on the highway it drops to the mid 6's, I expect mine will get better yet as I only have 9,500 k's on the clock so far

Absolutely disagree, most cars have two fog lights on the rear. VW only did it this way for style and cost reasons on the Golf. In the US they come with two reverse lights. A fog light is a EU mandated item.

Two rear fog lights is better then one except when you're a tosser who drives around with them on.

Two reverse lights is better then one.

One bright light on one side could be a car with a faulty brake light on one side and a broken one on the other.

I don't mind/care if it has only one reversing light - just make it as bright as two. I find the level of illumination quite poor. And no-one seems to have been able to crack this one. Supposed high output bulbs don't seem to work. LED upgrades appear to have failed. And upping the wattage seems only to melt the lamp.

Agree. Your car engine is a precision engineered device, not a two stroke motor mower. You shouldn't have any problems if you follow the manual's and Mav's advice.

I do. One reverse light is not enough. And in my view if you're going to have only one, it should be on the right. Ironically, in left hand drive markets, the reverse light is on the right! Go figure.

I've been thinking about replacing the fog with a reverse light so I can have two.

But I think they chose the reverse to be on the left because reverse curb parking in the dark might be a bit hard otherwise. With backing out you can stick your head out the window for a better look if necessary.

It may not be the point of the thread, but I agree the single reversing light does not seem bright enough, especially if you are looking through the rear view mirror (the glare from the front lights exacerbates the dimness of the single rear light).
