  • Ever tried to open the boot while the engine is running!!

Guys, my new Jetta Tsi is teasing me, How the do you get into the boot when the car is running, I had an instance last week where i had to pull over and get something out of the boot, the car was running but the soft touch button on the boot wouldn't work, so I tried the FOB (while in ignition of course) and yet again nothing.......so...... I turned the engine off, tried the FOB again and there you go it opens!! is there some kind of feature that disables the boot from being opened while the car is running?? is it programmable??

have you set your doors to self lock when your car moves? if so, your boot is also locked, this happens in my golf, there is a central lock/unlock switch where it will unlock the boot while the engine is running.

Yes the car does lock automatically, but to open the boot I have to unlock the car to get out first, so I would have thought the boot would unlock too??

just to clarify on the boot issue on a jetta....

there is no button or lever i can pull to open the boot from the driver side, is there? something similar to the fuel filler cap release button ...

correct me if im wrong, but the only way to open the boot is via the key when the car isn't running or by physically getting out of the car when the car is running, unlocking the locks and then pushing up the button above the rear number plates to open the boot, yes?

Why would you want to open the boot when the car is running? What would occur if you did this when moving? How hard is it to press the button to open the boot?

I don't understand what you want to achieve when there is a way to open the boot when the car is running and this requires you to unlock the boot and for someone to open the boot by pressing a button actually on the boot.

sorry, i don't think i made it clear. I DONT want to open the boot when the cars running.
I just wanted to know if there's a button or something inside the cockpit that i can press to open the boot from the inside....
Because in my old Accord Euro, there was a lever i can pull to open the boot from the drivers cockpit as well as the push button above the rear number plate and via the key.

                Just curious thats all...

Well I'm confused about all of this, I own a Golf GTI and am unsure about all the locking/unlocking features. I know that the car does not (hasn't been set to) lock doors while driving because I don't have to press anything for me or passengers to get out of the car without turning the engine off, does this mean that if i am at a set of lights someone can come along and open my boot and steal stuff from there????

Looks like I need to read more and do some hands on experiments.

                    I'm confused.
Are we talking about car pulled over on the side of the road, engine still running and you can't open the boot?

When traveling with the kids, we often pull over to get something out of the boot but leave the engine running, especially in summer to leave the AC going...

With my Jetta...when I start driving, I know that the doors lock automatically when i hit 15kms.

                      - all door locks automatically when driving. it locks after 15kms on the speedo (this is on my jetta. I think you can set it using the MFD)

                      - all door unlocks when key is removed from the ignition

                      - when all doors are locked when engine is on and you pull over, if you DONT press the unlock button to get out and you just pull the door handle twice to get out of the drivers chair for whatever reason, the boot will not open

                      - when all doors are locked when engine is on and you pull over, if you DO press the unlock button on the side to get out of the drivers chair for whatever reason, the boot WILL open

All I was asking was i'll repeat : I just wanted to know if there's a button or something inside the cockpit that i can press to open the boot from inside the car.
Because in my old Accord Euro, there was a lever i can pull (which was on the ground next to the fuel filler cap lever) to open the boot from the drivers cockpit as well as the push button above the rear number plate and via the key.

Many moons ago when I was a teenager, I worked in the Grace Bros supermarket parcel pickup.

People with Mercs, Bimmers, Puegots, etc could sit in their car with the engine running because they had boot handles/switches while the proletariat in their Holdens, Valiants & Fords had to switch off, get out of the car, unlock the boot, etc; because they were standing there they then felt obliged to help load the car.

Fast Forward to today & eventually, (when they are older) when picking up the kids from their friends house, I just want to stop & honk without turning off the engine. They can come out & dump their gear in the boot.

The ability to open the boot while the engine is running is just one of those convenience things that comes in handy every once in a while.

I guess what was asked is if there is a dedicated button/switch in the cabin that can pop open the boot directly without further intervention like in most asian cars.

In VW's case (or most euro cars??) this is a safety step of accidently opening a boot during motion on the road, etc. by just unlocking it then you have to physically get outta the car and press the boot switch at the back to open it.

Once again, press the unlock button on the drivers door (twice if you have selective locking). The person that is wanting to open the boot presses the button on the boot and it opens.

How hard is this, why do you want additional levers when the car has it all built in!!!!!!!

Press the door unlock button one or twice if you have selective locking.

Train your children to press the button on the boot to open it then put their bags in the back. If your children can walk I'm sure they can press the button
