To Extend the Warrenty or Not to extend the warrenty
Statistically the policy price is set to make money for the underwriter, so statistically it makes little sense. That said some people will suffer major financial stress if big ticket items fail, which for some owners will be a part of the ownership experience. If you don't drive it like you stole it all the time and you have a strong commitment to the service schedule and periodic maintenance you'd have to think you were likely to come out better than the owners who do not, hence ahead of the game and don't need the policy. But if you are risk averse and do drive hard regulalry and only service when you think it needs it (or any combination of the above) perhaps its something you should buy.
Read the PDS to ensure you are aware of your end of the bargain and the exclusions before parting with cash if you elect to buy it.
I won't be buying it, the $1600 or so will be better spent on regular maintenance and premium lubricants and parts for us.
I will be considering it closer to the time it is required, as there are some concerns over the turbo and the aircon on the MKV - and as we plan at this time to keep the beast for 5 years it makes sense.

If the turbo and aircon do go, how much would that be to repair... estimates? My actual main concern is the DSG, a friend has told me they can cost an arm and a leg to repair if things go wrong.
1600 isnt to bad, i was thinking it was more around the 2000-2500 mark..
I love my Jetta, im just not ready to fork out the big bucks if something goes wrong.... its not that i dont want to, its more like i wont be able to....

AC can be $3500. DSG around $7000 or so for replacement.

If you do the chipping correctly the dealer will never know that it's there. Go the chip and then definitely the warranty.
I have the VW extended warranty, and I'm basically risking the normal one with what I'm up to, but as I intend to keep this car for several years, seems like a small price to pay to have a long warranty, except anything I've directly or indirectly messed with, but I accept that. Nice to think the rest of the machine is covered. If I had DSG and was keeping the car beyond the factory warranty, I'd absolutely get the extension from VW.
A well designed chip, especially the stealthy ones from the businesses on here, would be the way to go, as they are carefully designed and backed up by many many customers in the real world doing just fine. I'd pay for that.
I have allready deceided that I will either buy the extended warranty for 2000 dollars,and keep the Jetta for another 2-3 years,or I will change it over well before it reaches its 3rd birthday in November.
Had an extended warranty on my previous Holden Astra TS,and it paid for itself many times over...
I'm considering whether the extended warranty would be a good idea with the DSG-equipped TSI, given the more complex tech involved. Of course, the cost would almost completely negate the purchase price saving compared with a GTI, given its extra features (which by comparison has relatively well-proven turbo tech, though it would have still had the DSG).
I know it sounds 'woossy', but I bought the TSI because its ride comfort was more suited to a young family (5), and I thought buying a GTI and then asking the dealer to soften the suspension settings would be just too weird...

Now: MY13 Candy White Golf VI 2.0 TDI DSG (yes, I've come over to 'the dark side'...)
If I still own the GTI by the time the 3 years comes around, I will definitely extend the warranty. Turbo and DSG and Aircon replacements are the things that would likely cost the most and what one would be protecting against. But even a high pressure fuel pump letting go wouldn't be cheap, nor would replacing the primary pump in the tank.
Another issue is selling a 3yo VW - would you find it easier to sell privately with 2 years warranty still remaining?
I know as a buyer I would choose such a car over one without it, even if it was $1600-$2000 dearer.
