Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

How many manuals do you have? There are multiple manuals for the car.

I'm pretty sure this has been discussed before. There are countries in Europe where it is a legal requirement for the curb side light parker light to be lit up when parked on an unlit street. A Dutch guy at work was telling me about it.
        Found the thread:

Why would it drain your battery? Unlike leaving the parking lights on your're not lighting up both front lights (10w), both rear lights (10w), the dash etc (say 5w) and you're only drawing 10w in total which is bugger all.

I am unsure, someone should do a test - but I feel you are possibly right, 10w should not drain the battery of a new car overnight (considering the MASSIVE battery size).

I raised this with my German stepfather, and he remembers the war (as a youth living in Germany) with his recollection being that the cars that the senior military used DID have swastikas on some metal pressings like hubcaps, but not production cars. That being said it is a while ago now for him to remember.

I'm not sure what size the battery is but assume it has 80ah capacity. A 10watt load @ 12v is around .85amps. Not taking into account the drain from other systems and the minimum number of volts required to start the car you could easily run them for days without problems.

Well it isn't in mine. Trust me, I do check these things before I post up. If it is, it must be hidden somewhere.

I read the thing front to back the day I got the car.

Like I said, there are a number of things that the car does, that are not in my manual.

Maybe VW Poster can find the section of his manual it is in and post it up - you may missing a section from your ring binder? From memory there are many parts to it...

When I picked uup my new Jetta I was told about the rear fog light. All VW's have one and I drove my old Golf for 5 years and I never knew about it!

Sorry, inappropriate comment, in my view. I'd suggest we stick to commenting on cars.

Not really, if used correctly you would have them turned on, on the side of the car facing into the road not the side next to the kerb or footpath.

Funnily enough, this might just be the reason those small globes in our headlight clusters are called parkers!

It still cracks me up though when you park in a poorly lit area somewhere at night and someone who don't have Euro car comes up and says 'You've left your lights on'. 'Yes, it's supposed to be like that, it's a parking light'. Followed by blank look.

                            See also this recent thread.

Hopefully not turned on blinding the driver behind you at night like half the drivers of late model Excels who probably don't know what that extra button is for!

I think it's probably just one of those things that are assumed you would know about.. The manuals are pretty blanket in terms of what they cover and don't seem to be very country specific.

Parking lights on mk 1 GLD

I was wondering on my Mk 1 GLD, twice happening that my parking lights where on when i parked the car. after reading your thread, I went outside to try it. The parkers stay on, when indicator stalk is in the rh or lh position, after ignition is turend off.
