Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • GTI - leather or sunroof?

Hi guys, if you could only pick one of these options whuich one would you choose any why? I am undecided and hopefully will buy a GTI or GT TDI this weekend, I can't afford both options (maybe no options if can't get good price). I have both leather and sunroof in my Subaru Liberty and enjoy them both. Here are my observations.

    Leather
    -------
great upmarket look, you feel a bit special , easy to clean
hot in summer, more expensive than the sunroof option.

    Sunroof
    --------
more airy cabin, can enjoy the drive a bit more with it open, let hot air out
no real negatives perhaps extra weight but don't think i'd notice this.

When my wife saw the GTI cloth seats she didn't like them that much. I haven't seen one properly yet so cannot comment.

    Interested to hear your responses.

      How tall are you?

I'm only 5'6" but if I was taller I'd hate the way the sunroof lowers the headlining.

Do you have kids? Leather is very practical with kids.

      Personally, I'd go leather.

PS: A mate paid ~$41k on road for a new GTI 5 door with leather.

          I'm about 5'6" or 5'7" tall.
No kids at the moment but planning perhaps next year.
My current car (Subaru Liberty) will become the family car (it has leather), we will keep this car for quite a while because it's very reliable and got a decent boot for prams etc. By the way, does baby luggage fit ok in the GTI?

Do you have the sunroof? I am 6'3" and find the head room in our R32 more than sufficient. Maybe if you lowered your seat, that might help.

Leather or roof? I'd go roof. Only because, living in WA, the leather does get hot, if you have parked in the sun. My wife wouldn't have it, given the choice, and she does most of the driving in our car
Have driven other Volkswagen vehicles with cloth seats, and I wouldn't be disappointed.

But, opinions are like arseholes....everyone else will say the other guy's stinks.

Go the leather, easier to clean and looks nicer.

The sunroof is so so, I never really used it that much in my last car and wouldn't have optioned that car with it but had no choice (Subaru Outback Luxury H6 so had leather and sunroofs standard) and the leather is more practical for everyday use.

You will be limited on choice of car and features anyway. There will be a lot more GTI's out there with just leather as an option rather then leather and sunroof or just sunroof. Depends on how flexible you are on number of doors, gearbox and colour.

You can also add leather after market for around the same price and this can be better quality plus you can choose your colour. You won't get electric lumbar support or seat heating this way as they are only standard with leather. You can sell the old seat coverings as they will be worth a bit.

I generally have my seat at almost the lowest position. I have short(ish) legs & long body. If I put the seat up I feel like Humpty Dumpty on the wall

My thoughts are based on observing all those people of abnormal height (such as yourself) trying to cram themselves into their little cars.

Leather adds to resale value....sunroof does not.

I used to sell cars at one point.

Not strictly true Greg, maybe in theory. I'm balding and live in the south and opted for the sunroof rather than leather

As far as resale goes, I'd much rather a nice well sealed sunroof than wrinkled up leather seats that smell of sweat and turd !

Nothing personal either but if I was to come into the car yard you were working at and asked you why the car with the sunroof was dearer than the matching one without a sunroof your response would be ????

Sorry been there and done that !!!

If you are so undecided about either option, why not just save the cash and get both. At least you won't die wondering.

Just my opinion Russ, and hey I'm headed in the same direction, just not into sunscreen on my head!

I know it was only an opinion mate, I wasn't having a shot at you
Just remember though the benefits of a having a sunroof when you're balding are that you can get a full body recharge (via the solar panel) whilst driving
