A different thing altogether. I have VAG-COM and I don't think I'd switch for a handheld one. As for being able to do datalog, I am not sure that it could be read easily afterwards. There is a serial cable in the picture, which means you probably need to run it through a computer anyway.......
VAG-COM and one of those 9 inch laptops for $500 would be the best of both worlds even if it was more money.
A mini laptop + VAG COM would be around a grand. I don't know that the average person will get a grands worth of use from it. Most people will play for a while then clear error codes as they appear.
(I also believe it's possible to set some of the features on and off via these handheld units, like mirror dip??)
If you already had a laptop you could justify it a little more since it's then round $500.
I have the FeeBay special $20 USB cable and the old version of VAG COM, it can't do everything on newer cars, but pretty much everything on the MK3 Sadly I think the MK5 needs either one of these new cheap scanners than work the CAN bus or a genuine cable.
If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.
