  • Got my pirelli!

    Guys -

I ordered my yellow 5 door Pirelli on the 3/nov/08, and I just took delivery of it a few hours ago... I'm simply lost for words.

I've come from a V8 background (last car was a 5.7 litre Monaro, the last 270kw version before they stopped production), so I was expecting a bit of a drop in grunt from the little 2 litre.

I bought the car without a test drive (drove a regular GTI), with the hope the extra horses would be what I was looking for.

I just got back from a 1 hr blat up the freeway (Perth), and I have to tell you guys, I'm absolutely gobsmacked.

For those of you who know Perth, we have a nice straight piece of road that goes alongside the city, called riverside drive. It's pretty much a nice long straight piece of road with some fairly reasonable scenery. It was dusk, and I'd just warmed the thing up after picking it up earlier in the afternoon (I had baby feeding/putting to bed duty before I was allowed out).

Anyway, I drove the few km to this stretch of road from my house, and decided it was warm enough to put the boot in a little, there was next to no traffic. I dropped it down into 'S' and put the foot half way to the floor.

Holy christ. I'm not kidding you, I had no idea a golf could be so angry. The thing just lept forward like a rocket was up it's arse. What a sound, what a rush - then an amazing upshift. Coming down towards the first set of lights I wasn't expecting the throttle to 'blip' before it downshifted. Total sports machine.

And the launch control.. haha, what a laugh. Spun the wheels on my first few goes, amazing power for a little 2 litre.

I had no idea a golf could be so barking crazy. The package is amazing, and the sat nav system absolutely brilliant. Craps over the Tomtom in almost every respect.

After an hour I came home, and now I'm about to dissect the user manual.

Seriously guys, those of you who haven't driven one - you have to take one out. How on gods green earth are you guys needing more power, and getting these things chipped?... .Maybe it's only early days, but I just cannot imagine what it must be like driving the 240kw APR version of this car. I guess I'll find out, as it's booked in on Tuesday. Just insane. I drove a regular GTI on the test drive, and this thing is not even in the same league - not even in the same class.

I haven't laughed like this in years. What a rush.

Anyway, pics coming soon. Needless to say, it looks absolutely brilliant in yellow!!!!....

That's fabulous, Kryten ... now you see why we 'shun' run-o-th-mill Fords, Holdens and the like. The VW grin ... it doesn't go away.

    Cheers,
    Dave

Great write up. That first time feeling of driving a quick golf is definitely hard to beat! Enjoy it.

      Looking forward to some pics.

Actually, 355mm brembos were - I didn't know you could get a LSD on these things?.. Who makes/sells/installs those?

I still can't beleive it's a golf. Golf's aren't supposed to drive like this, golf's are supposed to be cool calm and collected, not completely mad.

Congrats Mate, and welcome to the forum

I do miss that first drive sensation, mine was in a test car that I was given over night.

                Nice buy!
I like the Golf in Yellow - they look great!

You often hear people say "there's nothing like a V8", but there sure isn't anything like a hot4 either. And the V8 guys find it hard to believe they're so fast too.

                Enjoy your new ride!

                    Congratulations

I am sure you are going to enjoy it as much as I have with mine, will have to keep an eye out for you as I want to see the yellow in real life, and are you in the northern suburbs.

JH have Pirelli’s on special at the moment for $ 51.100 drive away in this morning’s paper, good time to buy.

Welcome to the "ditch 4 cylinders club"

There's a few of us on here who have stepped out of modern 8's, and not really missed it! The economy vs fun factor is an amazing thing, then you get into the twisties......pure bliss.

You have an amazing piece of machinery, just be sure you take the time to get used to hi-po front wheel drive!

Try and keep your licence mate!

Peloquin and Quaife make then for the MKV with DSG, you can source a Peloquin through APR/Harding (and others).

Not sure who can install them in Perth, although I'm hoping Quattros will be up to the task as that makes the whole end to end process work with linked suppliers/installers.

Do you plan on going to the dealer for servicing, or somewhere like Quattro's (since your APR reflash is done there?)

                          Sorry mate, southern suburbs.

51k drive away? Fark that's alright. I barely got a cent off mine...

I got the sav nav, bi xenons and rear sensors....

                          There's another yellow running around in Winthrop/kardinya, that ones a 3 door however (mine's a 5)....

                            Mate you're not wrong.

The v8's may have the raw power, and the larger boot, but I tell ya - I just got back from taking it through Mundaring Weir Road (lots and lots of tight twisties and straights) - and you could never throw a heavy sedan around with such wreckless abandon... It was just sublime.

Quattro's are only a few streets away from me, so I plan on getting them to take care of all the servicing - assuming they seem like a good enough bunch and get it together with the APR.

It's booked in next week for the tune. Brakes and exhaust coming from the states in around 6 weeks.

We should organise a day out at the AHG driving centre, that's where I'm going to be taking it.
