Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • I haven't had any real problems with our Mk5 GTi, except for a few small "petty" issues that bug me occasionally...

Have a rattle somewhere, can't really figure it out, but it's definitely in the dash
Have a paint spot that's peeled off and VW are taking their sweet time getting back to us with fixing it under warranty - it looks like a splat and the paint is gone (looks almost like a rust spot, but not)
Sun visors need to be a bit longer - sun always kills me driving home in the afternoon - it's just right in that spot.

Other than that, I love the car.

Have had no performance issues, the side mirrors don't bug me at all, the indicators haven't distracted me, the lights are bright enough, I don't put my sunnies in the holder - they're on my face or in the side door pocket.

I can say that I do get a wet arm if it rains and I have to put my entry tag against the car parking boom at work, but I keep a hand towel in the car now and dry it off.

I love the DSG, but would also love the manual, since I've driven both. Will get manual in my next car (once I have to get a bigger one for the kids and dogs). The sound of the indicators is fine, I hate them to be loud, and I'm OCD, so I make sure they're off once I've turned or changed lanes.

All in all, a brilliant car. Am waiting for the Mk6 though - I think it's gonna be even better!!!

Cheers for the fashion advice Zoolander!
Previous post made mention of Oakley Gascan, note they are nothing like either images you posted, nice try all the same though.

      • Evo shifter (dual clutch) is the opposite to the DSG.
Pull back to go faster makes much more sense to me.

I don't think having the indicators on the side mirrors are safe - while they may be at eye level and to people who are familiar with their location it's ok. Most drivers expect to see a side repeater in the front quarter panel behind the wheel. So to people who are unaware of their location (and let's face it, they aren't hugely bright during the day) it could cause a problem. Honestly I think all side repeaters should be normal light bulbs located just behind the wheel.

But saying that (and safety aside).. Indicators on the mirrors look awesome!

What annoys me about my Mk5 Jetta:
-The sunglass holder size (which some people may have mentioned)
-A rattle in the "indirect" air vent (the only rattle in the car)
-Sometimes it take 2 attempts to close the boot
-No aux input.. I mean come on! A Honda City has them standard!

Things I love about my Mk5 Jetta:
-Everything but the 4 things I mentioned above
(In particular the horn and the styling)

Have a look at the Skoda Octavia, even the sunglasses holder is bigger ( than most other cars )

              • I think one big issue I have noticed is that poor or lack of water/rain stoppers/channels over the doors (if thats what they are called). The past few days have rained like cats and dogs and everytime i go to open the windows or even teh door, huge amounts of water leaks into the car.

The other thing i would have liked is a 12V socket INSIDE the centre armrest console as this is where the AUX IN is located. If i want to plug an MP3 player etc, I need to have the power lead extend out across my shifter to plug into the coin tray socket and it can get messy.
