2005 Comfortline Auto 16,000KMs $19,000 Good Price?
Hi, I'm thinking of buying 05 Comfortline Auto in excellent condition. It's only done 16,000KMs and the owner wants $19,000 for it. Is it a good price? I have never owned a GOLF before. I'm actually tossing btw this and Brand New Jazz (can be had for $19,000 as well). Since this is a GOLF forum. Can you convince me why I should get the GOLF?

Honda Jazz aren't a bad little car though - cheap to run, service, etc.
But $19,000 is a bit much for an 05. I'd want to see the price down around $17,000 for that car. You have to remember that thanks to the crap car market you shouldn't be paying the first price a vehicle is advertised for...
As Phaeton said it would help a lot if you gave the details of the Golf, That is, is it a Petrol / Diesel 1.6, 1.9, 2.0 litre engine ??? I just did a bit of research on the different models and for that sort of money I am guessing you are looking at a 2005 VW Golf Comfortline 1.6 litre petrol (PULP) 6 speed auto ? If that's the case then $19,000 with only 16K on the clock is not a bad buy as Carsales have it listed as a similar car having between 60 -100K on the clock and private sale pricing of between $18,900 - $21,100. Comparatively the other 2005 MK V Comfortline models and private seller prices are listed as follows -

Considering these are RED BOOK prices they seem a little higher than I would have expected for a private sale as I always understood the R.B. to be more for the dealers to rip you off from (oops !! I mean negotiate your vehicles value from) and I would certainly be doing some thorough searching of the dealers for a vehicle as well and weighing up the options.
It's a buyers market out there at the moment as my son Cam has just bought an 07 VW GOLF COMFORTLINE 2.0 TDI 6sp manual with 16,700 k's from a dealer and picked it up for $25,500 but it was originally advertised at just over $30k so I think he did pretty well for himself considering the R.B. private price is around $26,500 (with much higher K's travelled) and it really is in immaculate condition as well.
I would probably continue to shop around a bit myself on the private front but just remember when you buy privately it's BUYER BEWARE because there is no comeback if there's a problem and unless this particular vehicle has extended factory warranty on it you're on your own IF it has any issues (unlikely as it may be) and VW's are not the cheapest to repair and maintain. I sold my wifes 1.6 Trendline with highline MFD, Alloys, Satnav for 20k from memory 6 months ago so i'm glad i did it back then. It had under 40 on it and was an 06 model. If they are seriously that cheap i'll flog her Passat and get her a Tdi

As it has done only 16000km the tyres should be original. So I would look at the date code on each tyre to confirm they are not newer that the build date of the car. We looked at a 21k km car but 2 of the tyres were newer than the car so that put the car off the list for us.

It seems to me to be good value. Suggest you check that all of the serving has been done and every thing should be OK.
Talk to your VW dealer about a genuine VW extended warrant which gives you 3 years and 60,000k warranty.

The extended warranty is only available to purchase during the initial 3 year warranty when purchased new. Remember we are now in 2009 so unless the vehicle was first registered in mid to late January of 2006 (which is highly unlikely) or had the extended warranty applied to it whilst still within the initial 3 year period from new, then there is no warranty left or the option to extend it.

If so, should I just call RAC or bring it to the dealer? I'm worried because I heard there are some reliability problems with the MK5. However, the owner said, there had been no problems and from my test drive of the car, it seems everything is working well.

Your url doesn't work. I just went onto the VW site as suggested I admit I was unaware that VW offered an extended used car warranty and I stand corrected and apologise if I have misinformed anyone. I was actually more so referring to an extended new car warranty and was informed only yesterday by the Service Manager of my VW dealership that extended new car warranty was only available whilst the car is still under new car warranty, they forgot to mention anything about a used car extended warranty. The fact that the vehicle in question in the first post has only very low k's then an extended used car warranty would probably be beneficial. Link to details below -

I have bought a couple of used cars from dealers in recent years which have still had some new car warranty available on them and have never had any issues with the warranty being transferred over into my name. I think however if you purchase the car privately you need to get the owner to fill out a section in the book so that the remainder of warranty will be transferred over to the buyer.
It's not so much a case of being the original owner as it is of being the current owner whilst the vehicle is still within the new car warranty period which for new VW is 3 year / 100,000 kilometres. I know that if you look in the service handbook there are several pages available for entering additional owner details onto. I took the service booklet with me when I saw the dealer on Friday and they have now entered the new details (ours) into the system so that the remainder of the warranty and roadside assist has now been transferred over to us (now covered until 6 / 2010) We will also be eligible for the extended new car warranty as long as we opt for it before the expiry date in June 2010 and meet certain criteria as set out in their terms and conditions. It would cost around $1300 at the moment so I was informed and as this didn't include Raodside assist you would also need to contact Roadside assist and pay an additional premium (around $150, I was told) to get another 3 years added on. The used car extended warranty will still be available after that time provided the vehicle meets the selection criteria (ie number of k's travelled etc...)
and I would certainly be doing some thorough searching of the dealers for a vehicle as well and weighing up the options.
