Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I am around the same big yellow. i use Vortex and ultimate but find i get slightly better kms out of the vortex. performance is negligible either way

I average 10/100km after 11000kms driving. I only get around 8/100kms on highway only. I have no idea how they came to the figure of 8L/100 combined when i bought the car!!

Manufacturers numbers are very low compared to real world driving!!

When i had my Yaris it was a claimed 6.xxxL/100km, but I got no where near that!!

In the R32, cruising to Daylesford at 110kmh, i averaged 8.9L/100km.

I've only done about 6500kms with the average at 10.5L/100km so hoping it will improve over time. But i doubt it as my daily route to work and back involves quite a few traffic lights lolz!!

        Hi guys

Since first posting this I have found that I have a faulty lambda probe. Am awaiting a new one to be put in. They suggested that this might be a possible cause for it using too much fuel. I am also getting what appears to be fuel cutrs around the 2000-2400 rpm range particularly when cold. Could this all be the fault of the lambda probe or do I have it all wrong?

He's trying to confuse you with terminology. Lambda probe is commonly known as oxygen sensor.

Common symptom of faulty one is high fuel consumption due to the ECU not being able to determine the actual richness of the mixture. It compensates for this by feeding in far too much fuel to prevent excessive lean burn and subsequent engine damage.

Not sure if it would cause what seems to be fuel cuts, maybe the excessively rich mixture is even worse when the engine is cold and using the cold start dual injection cycle, and this causes engine hesitation (like in the olden days when you apply far too much choke).

South Australia has only one oil refinery, at Port Stanvac, operated by ExxonMobil.

I would assume that this would mean the oil for much of the state is very similar between all the brands... It's very hard to gauge the effectiveness of different brands/types using anecdotal evidence.

Well in Perth we have a massive choice of 2 premium unleadeds! lol BP Ultimate and Caltex whatever it is as far as I know. Never been a fan of caltex fuels for some reason but until relatively recently we only had BP ultimate so thats what I have always used.
The best country mileage I have done on it was 5.8L pre-APR tune!! Which kinda blew me away. Since the APT tune though I haven't done a lot of highway driving but have already noticed its probably slightly better fuel economy than stock. Around the streets though its a little thirsty due to my new lead foot.
Not sure that BP ultimate gives you that much more fuel economy, certianly more than BP Unleaded 95 though but after 2 years the car still sounds very quiet and idle economy seems to have got better. On idle it sits between 0.7 -0.8 these days where as it used to just sit on 0.8-0.9. So make of that as you will.

hehe mozzy, we only have one refinery in Perth and thats BP. any 98 made in Perth is made by BP and then just market by caltex under a different label.

(a small amount is imported but most is BP product made in Kwinana)

Almost the same 7.6l/100 now just over the 4500 mark. I also did the calculation and it was a very similar result.

IIRC the maximum capacity of memory (2) is only 99.9 hrs running time. So your "lifetime average" won't be a true total once you have driven for more than 100 hours. A lot of people assume that seeing as they have never reset it, it will continue to accumulate for the life of the car.

i noticed the reset the other month after i filled her up. i think it can only count up to a certain number of kilometers as well?? pretty sure that reset automatically too.

I think the whole of memory 2 resets, so that is distance, time, average speed and fuel consumption.

wish they could have it go for longer though!
