  • BP Ultimate

I decided to give BP Ultimate a go a few weeks ago. Their sticker at the bowser saying that continued use can save you xx% of fuel caught my eye.

How long should I be waiting? I have filled up three times and if anything my refills are no testimony to the promise they make.

I was very surpised the first time I refilled .. I had been on the highway for about 300kms and when I went to refill thought I should average 8-8.5 litre per 100 kms. Imaging my surprise when the bowser topped up the fuel tank and my calculations showed that I had got no better than 9.5 (in fact closer to 10) litres per 100 km! Again I did another 300 km round trip on the road and again filled it up again thinking that it should show 8-8.5 and again it was 9.5 litres per 100 km.

I think I will go back to V-Power whihc I was using before. I haven't noticed any real difference between the two and I get four cents off. Also down my way BP Ultimate is about 12.1 over the normal unleaded price where as V-Power is about 10-11 over the normal unleaded price.

Anyone had different results regards savings?

12.1!!! thats awesome. i looked this morning and BP Ultimate was 21c over unleaded.

as for BP Ultimate, i've always used it and always will. i used V-Power once in my Polo when i first got it (i didn't think i would make it to the BP and i was running late for an inspection) and it ran like crap so i went back to BP Ultimate. Haven't had a problem since.

Try reading the fine print, or the posters they have up at the pump or the brochures they have inside which clearly state that this is compared to regular unleaded. Comparing it to V-Power is pointless.

oh....i did not mention anything about that because i thought it was pretty obvious that the '% saving' claim was comparable to regular unleaded....not other brand premium. i thought everyone knew that

If you like V-Power, and you really like the 4c cheaper price, and the BP doesn't give you better mileage, change back. It's my view that you will, sooner or later, get a bad tankful of Shell which will cause your car to run like shyte.

FWIW my last 1200k has resulted in 7.8l/100 with 4 adults on board the whole time. Steep windy roads, and flat highway combined about 50/50.

All on BP Ultimate. Lifetime average is now on 8.1l/100 at 4,500ks. The computer is very close to real life consumption.

I used Shell a few times in the Cefiro, and it didnt like it. BP ever since, and now that works shouted me a BP fuel card, Id be nuts to go anything else.

That said tho, I used to have a mate who was working at both Shell and BP refinerys. He has always maintained that the BP product is a better petrol, its cleaner burning, and at a lower heat. (ps, he wasnt a labourer there, he was one of the dudes testing the end product)

I think the %ge fuel saving that BP is claiming for Ultimate might be based on a car with (partially) blocked injectors. After it has been running on Ultimate for a while (ie quite a few tankfulls) the injectors get cleaned by the extra detergent, hey presto the spray pattern is back to what it should be, and therefore reduced fuel consumption. If your car's injectors are OK to start with (and most are) then you won't notice any difference.

The other thing to be aware of is that in some OZ locations there is only one refinery, so all the 98 octane fuel in that location is from that one refinery. It is possible that some distributors put in the special brand-specific additives that make them different, but then again, perhaps not always

As usual, the devil is in the detail (and the significant part of the detail is often not well publicised).

i have used mobil 8000 since i got our car earlier this year. had achieved around 8.5 - 9.0 L/100k's since new with normal daily work driving, mixture of freeway and suburban streets. After being chipped i now get better than that. average has dropped down to around 8L/100k's all the time.
have a 2.0TSI with apr chip.
yesterday i checked consumption when i filled up.
travelled 575k's and put 44.64L into it. works out better than 8L/100k's

This post sounds like another stupid case of "Don't run your fuel tank to empty" and "don't turn the A/C on while doing speed".

My dad contracts to the Shell silo station in Kernel. The same petrol in the silos is used by all trucks that come to fill up, BP, Shell, Caltex, the lot. The only difference is the additives they use (Shell has them installed ready for any brand's petrol delivery).

Further, when one of the other brand's silos are running out, they simply turn the pump on the pipeline and send them petrol.

It's all the same stuff, just different additives. And when it comes to diesel, sometimes, although infrequently, it's still the old high-sulphur stuff that it's now illegal to sell out of the bowser.

I got 6.7 l/100kms (Melbourne to Albury) and (Golburn to Penrith) @110-115 kms/hr over the Hume in the last 2 Days. Both used BP Ultimate with full load, aircon, and recommended tyre pressure for the load.

My 2,500kms Sydney-Melbourne-Sydney Drive finished on 7.6 l/100kms due to some high traffic areas with the season, and city driving.

My Worst experience was with a Caltex fuel, Bad batch I guess, but I stayed away from since

That is an awesome return on your fuel consumption. Hahaha...I was happy with 8.0L/100 in the 2576km between Townsville and Sydney with 3 days driving around Brisbane. All on BP Ultimate.

Just got back from Jervis Bay; the trip involved going through Kangaroo Valley down and back including smoking 3 cars up the hill in the southern side....

5.4l/100km by the trip thingy so should be about 6 in reality.

I've been using Vortex 98 and BP Ultimate down here in Melb, and on occasions I find that Vortex gives me better milage.

What kind of milage are the other .:R drivers getting atm?

Im kinda getting any where in between 500-600kms a tank with an avg of about 10.5L/100kms according to my MFD.
