Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

any thoughts on this or has anyone else heard otherwise?
Something I'll have to ask APR / Oettinger!

Having the supercharger all the time is not good as it wont be efficient after 3000rpm..... and even if it was, it is going to create WAYYYY too much boost.

The REAL answer is altering the software so that the electronic clutch is always engaged below 2500-3000rpm. That way when you initially step on the gas in Drive, it wont hesitate while it engages the electronic clutch for the supercharger!!

          GT Performance

Can anyone advise where I could get some advice on changing the ECU chip here in Melbourne and any downside to doing so? Also wondering if anyone has managed to swap the boost gauge for a temp gauge as fitted to the GTI.

offtopic but just buy a scangauge 2 it will show any readout from the ECU including Boost (MAP), water temp, ACTUAL KPH!!! etc etc. Bout $200. Plugs into OBD2 port and has thousands of colours display.

Welcome to the forum, lots of useful info and some helpful people too

If you do a search on remap I'm sure you will discover weeks and weeks of reading, and realize just how many different opinions there are about performance "chipping" (these days they mostly just remap the ECU, they don't actually change a chip).

Some people will tell you there are no downsides to remapping at all, others believe there are some issues that should be considered first (factory warranty, emissions, legality, insurance, economy, tyre/drive train life, risk to the ECU while remapping, local support, remapping after dealer over writes the remap).

I believe that at the moment there are only a limited number of tuners offering remaps for the 1.4 twincharger motor as supplied in Oz.

IIRC there was some discussion recently about swapping the boost gauge for a temp gauge, I think the consensus was that you would need to swap out the whole dash display unit (tacho, MFD & speedo), and that it would be a very big job, so it is probably more realistic to go for a separate temp guage or a multi-functionality gauge like a Scanguage.

                Any updates?

It really is a shame that the only tunes available in Australia are by REVO (cheap) and Otteinger- who want bank bailout money. Both companies have ZERO dealers in WA and both FAIL to have a handheld tuning unit like Bluefin, which would eliminate the need for a local dealer.

APR on the other hand does have a dealer in WA but have no tune for 1.4TSI.

Whoever releases first will have the market to themselves...(I would still prefer to buy from GUY though, more effort and research on local cars)

Oettinger software is available in WA at Quattro motors - Victoria Park - they actually just received their new Oettinger M/EDC17 ECU tools last week (first outside of Brisbane).
