Insurance company recommendations

Hi Folks,

Well the paper work is almost through need to take out a policy for the Jetta 2.0l Tdi 6 sp manual. Has iPod adapter and metallic paint. I'm just wondering who everyone would recommend and what value insurance I should request. Purchase price was $34945 on road but if it got written off not sure whether I could get it at that price again.

I'd definitely give Allianz a go, I found they were extremely competitive.
Because they underwrite the extended warranty plan for VWA it seems like they'll really look after VW owners for the normal comprehensive policy too.
Do the quote online, it'll give you an actual market value which you can then change to an agreed value and compare the different premium prices, pick whichever suits you best.

There's been a few thread on here about insurance companies. Also on the golfmkv forums so do a search for more information.

Basically summing up my experience is that AAMI suck, they choose the lowest cost repairer and the quality of work is poor and they only have one year new for old replacement.

CGU who I went to offer three years new for old and let you choose the repairer.

Allianz offer two years new for old and they have authorised repairers they prefer you to use.

Western QBE offers four years new for old and they have authorised repairers they prefer you to use.

Volkswagen also offer insurance through Allianz from memory with some different features.

If you are going to do stuff to the car (ie, do it up) look at shannons too.

try a broker, they can often get good deals and you dont pay them. i tried to insure my GT-P with CGU and they werent even interested in discussing it, yet the broker got me a great deal thru CGU.

Whovever you ultimately choose, make sure you are very honest about your details, and any mods, as thery will quite hapily take yr premium, but if youve not told them the full truth, they will use that to not pay up on a claim

I stopped using a broker years ago, when I found out I was paying more than if I dealt directly with the Insurance Company.

I have both VWs & home Ins with Shannons.

I'm now with Shannons who have been good, although I have never needed to make a claim.

Having a modified vehicle limits your choices dramatically, especially in my area. Luckily the car is garaged and has an immobiliser so it checks most of the right boxes for most.

In your case it's all standard so pretty much everyone will cover you.

I went with Western QBE due to their 4 years new car replacement, I've also only got a $100 excess and max no claim bonus for life, so it's not the cheapest out there, but good for piece of mind. (About $900/yr for a 36yr old Golf GTI driver in Perth)

I've just lodged a claim with them, and it was all too easy. You have to get a quote from one of their preferred repairers and one of your choosing. Their preferred repairer list is quite extensive anyway. To make a claim simply rang up, told them what happened, got the two quotes & they rang me back with the go ahead. No need to fill out any paperwork or have an assessor involved, etc. However, it was only quite minor - I'm sure an assessor would be involved if it was a bigger accident.

For any insurance, go to http://www.cannex.com.au/. For car insurance, click on the link to http://www.ratecity.com.au/ then click on compare now and fill in your details. It will then give you a list of companies, your policy cost, then it's up to you.

A word of advice guys if you are buying a 'new' car but you are not the first registered owner, 95% of insurance companies insist that you must be the first registered owner or the 'new car guarantee' does not apply (defualts to market or agreed value).

They will often give a 10% brand new car discount in the first year, and I have noticed other sneaky stuff going on too at renewal time. It goes up every year without fail, but they will do stuff like sneak up your excess, reduce your agreed value etc.

Also, I have found they will usually price match and bring your premium back to reality, particularly if you have been with them for a few years and threaten to leave - especially when you have more than one car with them.

i have all our cars insured with shannons... only one that will recognise the value in most of them (RACV didn't recognise a 1957 beetle as it was not on their system)... all are agreed value and our 74 bug we submitted photos of proof of work that had been done etc to get the valuation higher.
Have not had to make a claim yet (knock on wood) and have salvage rights on all cars, free windscreen replacement every year etc etc... and 3 are on limited k's to reduce the premium.
The only issue i have had was when i renewed this year... the agreed value on the 74 bug dropped by 5k, and the jetta dropped by 7k even tho it was only 5 months old at the time. I rang to find out what was going on and they agreed that it was incorrect and adjusted the values back up to what they were.
