I'm talking about the 2.5L Petrol sold in the "Rabbit" and Jetta in the US.
Right, that 5 cyl engine. IIRC I think I had seen some rumours a while back about VW turbo-charging that engine, but it seemed more like wishful thinking to me at the time, and I haven't heard anything recently.
VAG generally seem to be moving to smaller engines (both diesel and petrol) with higher boost in an effort to maintain performance while also reducing fuel consumption and lowering pollution (hence the series-turbocharged 2.0 TDI, and the hi-po versions of the 2.0 turbo petrol with variable valve timing).
Of course it remains to be seen which engines we will actually see in Oz (look at the delay bringing in the Pirelli Golf, and the current dithering re the Scirroco for an example of how long VWA take to make up their mind about what to import).
2017 MY18 Golf R 7.5 Wolfsburg wagon (boring white) delivered 21 Sep 2017, 2008 Octavia vRS wagon 2.0 TFSI 6M (bright yellow), 2006 T5 Transporter van 2.5 TDI 6M (gone but not forgotten).
I was at the filming a few weeks back. Its a Petrol vs Diesel neither are GTI's. Pretty boring piece.
That sums up the whole series of TGA. I'm surprised you didn't kill yourself at the filming, just being there would've been extremely painful to say the least... I wish VGA had nothing to do with it, why oh why are they sponsoring it?
Presumably due to the Golf comparison, VW chose to have only Skoda adverts during the show.
It was useful to see Stig do laps in the cars... did Stig ever do a lap in the 'bog standard car', so we can compare it with the 1:22 in the TDI?

What type of morons would try to present a fuel comparison test, when they change tyre pressures on 1 of the cars? I could see the humourous side (if they were comedians instead of jokers), but to say that the test was to compare fuel consumption, while the playing field was not level, is a completely invalid exercise. Who is directing these shows? Someone from a failed work experience camp?
Someone should put these clowns out to pasture. perhaps they would be better at producing a lawn mower show.
Bring on the REAL Top Gear, and sell this to the Kiwi's, or Nigerian Letter scammers.
