Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Ugn, now they're gonna turn hundreds of people off Golf.
I don't know how they do it, they take interesting cars and present them in such a stilted and boring way they become uninteresting cars.
And if that dolt says "it even blips the down changes" one more time... bloody hell.

the snippet at the fuel pump? - they had 5 spoke wheels - neither looked like GT/GTI to me.
At least not factory standard..

From the website's promo:
"Also, is diesel a better, more efficient fuel than petrol? With skyrocketing petrol prices affecting the pockets of drivers countrywide, Top Gear Australia gave Charlie and Warren identical Volkswagen Golfs with only one difference, one is powered by diesel the other petrol. It's diesel versus petrol, and every man for themself, as they take to the roads to find out which is more economical and which is faster."
Only ONE difference? Wonder if the petrol version ALSO has a turbo?
Seems to me the only relatively identical Golfs that could be used for this comparo would be the GT Sport twins.2007 Golf GT | DSG | TR | roof | iPod rubbish | R line fog grilles | R satin mirror caps | R pedals | R console trim | colour coded GTI valences | R32 Ormanyts

I hope its a GT sport twin comparision including qtr mile.
I want to know once and for all that I should have bought a diesel so that I can get my flail out and my hair shirt and start whipping myself daily.*Disclaimer - Don't rely on me, seek your own professional advice. Audi R8 E-tron. 230kw 4500nm! (not a typo).

If they compare the 2.0FSI (non-turbo) with the GT TDI then the GT will be both faster AND more economical.
BTW (and only slightly off-topic), does anyone know when the Golf GT TDI will get the new Common Rail (CR) motor ? It's now out in the Octavia RS TDI, so it shouldn't be too long before the Golf gets it too. The UK Skoda mob seem to like it.2017 MY18 Golf R 7.5 Wolfsburg wagon (boring white) delivered 21 Sep 2017, 2008 Octavia vRS wagon 2.0 TFSI 6M (bright yellow), 2006 T5 Transporter van 2.5 TDI 6M (gone but not forgotten).

I remember reading somewhere that this was indeed happening, as well as DPF's on all the diesels. I'm looking forward to the proposed twin turbo TDI "with no lag!" and the bigger capacity TSI's. All the pump injection will be replaced by common rail in the Mk VI. So far they've released it with the following petrol:
• 1.4L with 56kw & 132Nm
• 1.6L with 75kw & 148Nm
• 1.4L Turbo with 90kw & 200Nm
• 1.4L Twincharger with 118kw & 240Nm
And the following Diesel with DPF:
• 2L Common Rail & Turbo with 81kw & 250Nm
• 2L Common Rail & Turbo with 103kw & 320Nm (GT Model)
The only rumor of larger twincharger engines has been for the Tiguan, and there hasn't been any announcements for a long time and I doubt we'll see any in the golf.
The odd thing is calling the 103kw diesel a GT in Germany, cause there's definitely a more powerful diesel on the way, perhaps a "GTI TDI". Maybe it's only going to be ~125kw, so the GT had to take a power cut to fit in.
Then of course we know the 2L TSI (Turbo Only), probably in ~160kw/300Nm guise for a GTI, and a ~188kw/330Nm GTI-R 4Motion.
There has been no word of a twin turbo 4 cylinder TDI. In fact I've never heard of one being mass produced by anyone, ever, and I very much doubt there's enough exhaust gas to spool twin turbos on a 2L engine. Added to that they're all now Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG), which works well at low revs, there's no need for twin turbos.
The only other possibility is to make something out of the 2.5L 5 cylinder unit produced in the USA for their capacity hungry market. And with Europe's stringent reduction in CO2 a top priority to consumers, I very much doubt they could be bothered doing anything outside the US with that unit.Last edited by LiFers; 06-11-2008, 01:38 PM.

Lifers I'm only going by the Winter/Spring VW magazine, but on page 26 they interview Dr Hackenberg, the TSI engineer, and he mentions the following in response to the question "What is the future of diesel engines?"
"...VW has trialled various systems on the engine test bed and in practical situations. The best results overall are achieved with two turbochargers connected in sequence. As well as lowering fuel consumption and emissions, it improves the dynamics at low revs and the notorious "turbo-lag" is no longer perceptible. This is why VW will be developing this twin charging principle on TDI engines."

Week 34 is when proposed production starts.
Rumoured powertrain includes VW's new
-2.0 4 cylinder twin turbo TDI powertrain with 132kW.
-DQ500 DSG gearbox able to stand 500Nm of torque
