  • Help!! Advise on Erratic DSG

Yesterday, I was driving home and felt that the car was kinda of Jerky...That is like a new 'L' driver driving a manual car, the clutch release at too high will cause the car to be in a sudden forward jerk.

Sorry, shld mention that i am driving a 2006 Jetta 2.0T.

I was in a heavy slow moving traffic with some parts on upslope. read somewhere that the DSG could overheat for long period of uphill start-stop. I was probably in that situation for 15-25mins. is this the result?

I have not drove the car out yet today, but hope that some Gurus here could shine a light on this sudden 'jerky' episode.

    Thanks.

yeh mate mine was doing that when it was new.

still does it every now and again but i fix it by turning off the ESP and giving it a bit of a flogging. Seems to come good after that.

initial solution was to take it back to the dealer and get them to perform a reset on the gearbox and then let them recalibrate it.

Can't be bothered waiting 3hrs for them to reset the computer again.

      Thanks Yom.

Hope its an isolated episode, cos it sure feels like the gearbox was under lots of stress and seem to release too quick[which DSG is good for]

Have spoken to VW and they said no complains on this issue till now and will take a look at the car next wk appt.

But after so many cars and various gearbox including the CVT, the DSG is sure Fire Quick.

Nevertheless, hope the inspection will show no physical damage to the car.

my new GTI's DSG has been shocking ever since i bought it. its really rough on the take off jumping and jerking, and reversing its even worse... its really surgey and feels like im jumping on and off the throttle really violently. its bloody horrible!
its also very reluctant to kick down. i drove my sisters GTI the other day and i noticed how it would shift down to give better acceleration using less throttle input automatically (ie going at 60 and then going up a hill). mine on the other hand feels like you have to mash it before it kicks down.

i told the very uninterested VW head mechanic at my dealer and as per usual his reply was 'i didnt notice anything on the test drive.. its probably cos its still getting run in.. i'll look at it when you bring it in next time'
my old GTI never had this issue even when brand new.

i think a software reset is in order.

          Sorry for a silly qns...

As i bought the Jetta 2nd hand and the original dealer tat delivered the car was Barloworld Mascot, does that means that i could only go back to them for any issues?

or can i go to chatswood Classic for an opinion [as i am living nearby]?

          Thanks again..new to NSW

            Resets

Straighten me out if I'm wrong but I recall reading that all computer memory like DSG 'learning' how you drive can be reset / dumped back to ex factory settings by disconnecting both battery leads and grounding them together.

Try and resist the urge to do this unless you want to cause some damage!

Removing the negative battery lead for a while and reconnecting can be used to clear some learning, to do it properly you should use vagcom/vcds to reset it. I'd get your dealer to reset it at the next service, it's not worth messing around if you're not 100% sure on what you're doing.

There has been several software updates from VW for the DSG gearbox - keep persisting with VW - get the service advisor to drive it & drive another for comparison.

Get them to document it so if you have trouble later on, you have a comeback where it was reported during the warranty period.

Why drive something that is slower and uses more fuel

But you could buy an awful lot of fuel for the extra cost of a DSG over a manual (even at today's inflated petrol and diesel prices).

I just like the feeling of changing gears when I want (rather than when a computer decides it is appropriate), and am quite happy to admit that the DSG gives faster gear changes.

Plus I like to keep my cars for a long time (10 years plus), I'm not sure I'd want to own a DSG that wasn't covered by warranty.

But it is good to have the choice, I'm sure if I drove in heavy stop-start traffic a lot my left leg would try to persuade me that a DSG is better.

VW dealers always say that, it's their standard line.

Having said that, I haven't experienced anything like you describe, on rare occasions the DSG will seem to be in two minds but all in all it works fine and I love it. Take it to the dealer and have them install the latest software and see how it goes.

                          Cheers

2 months ago there were no new updates for my GTI's DSG.

Its a march (i think) build...can never remember.

but the reset worked wonders for me.

Finally took the car out for a spin...all back to normal...

suspect was the duration spent on the upslope in the start stop traffic. that cause the ECU to slight over-rev for the hill start off..just a thought..

I believe the ECU should be learning every drivers habit and deliver the usual driving patterns for max efficiency. where i used to have a CVT gearbox that was the case..

I will still go to the dealer to have a chat and see if theres any s/w updates or 'official advise'.

                              Thanks.
