  • Clutch kit options for daily driving

    Hey guys,

I have a APR Stage 2 GTI, possibly considering K04 sometime in the future. Enjoy sprinted driving however the car is a daily driver and I do quite a lot of city driving.

I’ve done 270,000km+ on the stock clutch/ dmf. Only now starting to slip when I put the foot down. (For those curious I do rev match and engine brake)

I’m considering a south bend stage 2 daily or possibly a stage 3daily with smf. Is it worth going for a single mass flywheel? I’m not too fussed on noise more drivability considering I do quite a bit of daily driving in heavy traffic.

Do aftermarket clutches last in general as long as OEM? I’m concerned of possible glazing with a performance clutch.

    Cheers, appreciate any advice

    Adam

You dont hear many people going with the South Bend option any more, most swear by the NPC or you also see people using the xtreme clutches. I think the South Bend were renown for being very noisy and a heavy pedal which would get annoying.

Ahh interesting, I’ve read a large majority of forum posts and a lot of people seemed to recommend Southbend for smf and RSR for dmf. Then again a lot of these forums are around 05 era.

Would you say aftermarket would last as long as my OEM? Or is it one of those compromises of performance over working lifespan?

        Appreciate the response

I would expect any clutch you buy to last a good amount of time assuming you don't abuse the hell out of it. And assuming it its rated higher than the power/torque you expect to make so its not slipping when under power.

Even the OEM Sachs unit is rated to 550nm of torque which is more that you would be making with a k04 and full supporting mods. With 270,000km I imagine your stock clutch is simply worn out.

I can vouch first hand for the stage 3 southbend being noisy and little bit heavy...

the noise is the worst part though, someone asked me if it was a diesel...

That’s good to know, southbend seems to be more suited for heavier use/ not mostly daily driving in traffic

FWIW I had a Black Forest Industries stage 3 clutch in my K04 mk5, and it burned out after 6 months of normal driving. Not recommended! I have a Sachs heavy duty now and it’s great — way lighter pedal feel than the BFI too — but not cheap.
