  • What to do for general service?

    Merry Christmas All,

I own a 2005 Golf GTI with a bit over 270k km, still on the same clutch and is running strong! I’m wanting to be more involved in maintaining my car and am wondering what I should include in my upcoming general service. My current list is:

    -Replace Oil/ Filter
    -Replace AC Cabin Filter
    -Replace Air Filter
    -Replace Coolant
    -Replace Fuel Filter
    -Replace Spark Plugs

Despite not having much experience in servicing cars I do feel competent enough to perform the above tasks. I would greatly appreciate any other areas to inspect and replace, I may have a mechanic look over other areas I don’t feel comfortable doing.

    Cheers,

    Adam

I would at the very least check the cam follower under the high pressure fuel pump as this is a wear item and often overlooked during general servicing.

If the coolant is genuine, there is no need for the often said 2 year replacement. I would go at least
5 years if it looks OK or during a cambelt change.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

Whats needed depends on what you know of the previous service history and where various longer life items items are in their life cycle.

            i.e. some typical values are
Diff and transmission oils - life around 80k kms
            brake fluid 2 years
            Coolant 6 years
spark plugs and coils 80k kms
drive belts can be inspected for wear and cracking but around 100k kms life

Sign onto Erwin and pay the fee for an hours access for around 10 Euro and down load all the files for your car using print to PDF. The will be a fully detailed maintenance section in the Erwin files for your car. Anything listed by VW as "Lifetime" really means its unlikely to cause the car to fail until the warranty runs out at around 100k kms

spend some time getting familiar with the site before spending your money so you can efficiently download everything needed in an hour
