Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Only if the car is written off as a repairable wreck or water damaged AFAIK in all states.

I think you're with AAMI so I'd be paying for the repair myself if that works out as the quality of the repair work through AAMI is average, they choose the lowest priced repairer and it shows in the work, been there quite a few times with AAMI and every time I've had the car back 5-10 times getting problems rectified.

If you're not overly fussy then you may be happy with the repairs but if you expect it to be the same as it was when you brought the car then you won't be happy with the repairs. Of course you may get lucky and get a good bodyshop that does VW work but in my experience the good bodyshops don't partake in the AAMI bid process..

it is a bit of a boys club. aami approved repairers no longer give you a quote to take away it gets sent to their office direct so you cant see what there actually quoting on (cutting corners). some of the repair shops when they hear it an aami job do a quote but tell you they wont be able to fit the job in for 2-3 months hoping you go somewhere else and they don't have to put up with as much b/s. after all said i am yet to have a problem with my repairer. My prefered repairer has always won the bidding.

I will be getting a copy of the quote as im not 100% sure that i will claim if its borderline. so then i can go to my preferred guy with the quote.

Needless to say they wont be getting my renewal this year. even some of the "budget" compaines like e-car etc have a better policy for claiming and dont require the running around in order to get it fixed. at this stage its nearly a week and im no closer as i still havent got the 1st quote thru.

They have an easy way to claim, drop the car off at the nearest AAMI center, get a cab to Hertz, pick up your $10 a day rental car, return the rental car, get a cab back to AAMI, pick up your car.

Unfortunately if you are picky you will be repeating this many times to get the car fixed correctly.

Yes, unfortunately i am picky, its my car and i want it fixed correctly the first time, lifetime guarantee just means that you can bring it back as many times as is necessary to get the car up to scratch, id rather a bit of running around to have it done right once, there are a lot of cowboys out there and i want to steer clear of them.

I was with AAMI but wasn't going to use them for the GTI. I went to CGU as they allow you to choose your own repairer so I could choose a VW specialist of my choice and not one based on price.

Every crash repair I had with AAMI sucked and it went back multiple times. The last time with my Subaru Outback I had it back ~6-7 times and even had arguments with the manager at Fairfield where he told me that the car probably came with the side rear window sitting out ~10mm from the body and that I hadn't noticed it! On the fourth refitting of the rear window and after removing all the urethane instead of adding more each time it fitted back in properly but they scratched the tint doing it. Even when I picked it up the first time they hadn't fitted the rear bumper properly and it took them 2 hours whilst I waited to fix it up.

So I wouldn't use them again, if you don't care about your car that much then they're fine but if you expect the job to be done properly as you said then run away to someone who lets you choose your own repairer.

Thanks, this is exactly what i want to avoid, and what i had heard from a lot of people, unfortunately after i had taken out the policy.

now if only i had the quote in my hand so i can go to get there "assessor" to agree to the repairs id be a lot happier.
