Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Golf 5 Headlights

    Hi Golf 5 fans,

My 2.0 FSI Comfortline has been bastardised with these headlights - aftermarket or off a higher spec Golf? They're bright - either LED or Xenon.

Either way, I'm going to swap them out for some OEM headlights... any recommendations for aftermarket OEMs or do I hit the wreckers?

And yes, these will be sold or swapped. If you have factory headlights in such good condition as these then I'm open to simply swapping them.

Any reason you are swapping them out? The factory halogen options aren't that great, sounds like a step backwards?

Probably is a step backwards... but I sort of like cars stock standard... it's a little hobby of mine to return this car to OEM spec... 80% of cars on the roads use halogen lights so, unless the Golf originals are particularly dim (which I've not read), they'll be fine.

Fair enough, they do look like the optional headlights found on the GTI and R32 which are OEM so maybe check before swapping them out.

Given the work and expense involved in converting to the OEM Xenon setup I'd say they are the Supernova projectors. They are plug and play on halogen equipped cars and look exactly like what you have. You will find at the wreckers that most cars are early MK5s and most have faded headlights (if they aren't smashed). You could potentially keep an eye out for 2010 Jettas, while they are uncommon they do tend to be in better condition being up to 5 years newer than the first mk5s - for me they have always been a good bet when visiting the wreckers. Great advice MEL744... they are growing on me, I must admit, but I can’t stand that they’re aftermarket. Anyway, I’ve got to replace 3 out of 4 door lock actuators first.

Out of all the aftermarket ones they are certainly the best looking in my opinion as they are quite close to the OEM ones. Was tempted to fit a set to my car, but not a huge fan of the black housings - suppose they could always be split and repainted. Enjoy the door lock actuator replacements, a true rite of passage for MK5 ownership

My lights are quite bright. I’m going to pull a globe and see what type it actually is. I’m guessing LED.
