ISOFIX and Latch using the rigid connector are FAR superior to the current backwards 1960's thinking of the Australian ADR's. All the evidence you need is out there, all you have to do is remove your blinkers and take a look.

Personally I will buy an ISOFIX unit for my car because I would rather get the best protection that I can, if it costs $200 more so what? If I can get it in easy clean leather that matches my car that's even better, so what if it costs me a little more because this is my choice but at the end of the day why would I purchase a system that I KNOW is inferior and does not and cannot offer the same protection as ISOFIX.

At the end of the day, I bought what I did because I wanted what I believed to be the safest restraint system for my baby. I couldn't be happier with what I have. It is clever, secure and incredibly versitile to boot. I can put the capsule in and out of the base in seconds, and get confirmation green indicators to tell me it is installed correctly. I can also move the whole system to another car in approximately 3 minutes.

The whole process I went through researching and purchasing just made me despise the arrogance and stupidity of Australian bureaucracy. After all, something that those wogs in Europe use couldn't possibly be good enough for us. We are Australia - "we have the toughest standards in the world". New Zealand happy accept both EU and JP standards in addition to AUNZ standards. Why can't we?

For the record, if I do get 'pinged', which is highly unlikely anyway, I wont be buying a sub-optimal Australian sourced product because it meets our "standards".

i also bought a Recaro booster seat for my kid. it is solidly built and imho much better than any booster i see in the shops locally. it is not ADR approved (i guess no one has tested it) but it meets the EU standard which to me is more than good enough for my kids.

Some interesting comments about the local carmakers here.

For the information of all, every single LHD VE made at Holdens Elizabeth plant has an 3 ISOFIX brackets (LH/CTR/RH) fitted to them.

If the Govt updated the ADR's to allow ISOFIX, it would increase the cost of a RHD VE by a poxy $20 at most.

Why don't they just fit them standard to the cars in Australia so when (if?) we ever update our ADR's out of the stone ages the owners of these cars can benefit from safer and easier to fit child seats.

The problem will be is that when the ADR's are updated there will be very few of the ISOFIX seats for sale because the market will consist entirely of late model European cars whereas if you had a few years worth of Falcons and Commodores you would probably double your market.

I also have the Maxi Cosi for my son which fits up to the IsoFix points on my Jetta and plugs into our Bugaboo with no hassles.

We have a Safe n Sound seat in our Jetta. I think it's the "Guardian" model. Bout $250 on sale.

We bought 3 seats (1 for each of our cars, 1 for the in-laws who look after my son now and then). Benefit of standardisation is covers can be swapped (handy after 'accidents'). Our other car is a Jeep, and my in-laws have a MkV Golf.

I will recommend that you get a seat saver or some other mat with slightly raised sides to put under the seat - for most baby seats do not contain spills properly. I spent 15 mins on the side of the road on the weekend after my son threw up on a particularly windy mountain road - the seat saver saved the seats!

I'll also note that when my son was 0-4mths, we bought a capsule for him to travel in. Capsules are far safer than convertible seats for very young babies. My wife and I did the sums and figured buying a capsule + mid-priced seat was better than trying to buy a really good convertible seat to do both.

I ended up buying Safe-n-sound Meridian retractor $419.00, midnight grey. It goes well with car interior.
My wife saw a nice Steelcraft pram/pusher (red in colour) so ended up buying that too. Total today's expense $708.00. Still to buy a baby cot......

HAHA...you have only just begun. We have 5wks to go and i would put total expense to around 7k so far.

Will admit being the first child im sure it is getting spoilt but man the stuff adds up quickly.

Do you have a rough breakdown of the 7K? Did you sneak in some car mods? New "baby safe" lowered suspension? Getting to hospital faster ecu upgrade?
