Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Mk5 Sportline 2.0 Not cranking :(

Hey guys, I've been at it for a while on my little VW, going wild with a multi meter testing things left and right and I think I've reached the extent of my expertise (or lack there of).

Was driving my golf, perfectly fine one day, turn it off, came back out about an hour or two later to head off again, and the car doesn't crank whatsoever. Feels like someone unplugged the starter. Look down and notice that my radio is on, headlights are on and the instrument panel is backlit, but I don't have any reds, so that was odd. Turns out brakelights dont work in this state, and neither does opening the boot.

thought I might've just blown a fuse so I pulled all of them out 1 by 1 to check and no problems there. Grabbed a multimeter and started going through the EBox in the engine bay, relay's working fine too. turns out I'm getting 12v through one side of the ignition relay and into the ECU, but at the other end on the signal wire to the starter motor, I only turn up with 1.5v. I tested all the wires I could for continuity as well, and found nothing abnormal

The relay seemed to be functional when I pulled it out to test it myself, so I'm thinking my ECU has thrown a no-start code somehow, but I don't have a code reader/scanner so I don't really know what to do next, seeing as my multi meter spree only really narrowed it to an ECU problem.

Anybody have any ideas? Anyone near Newcastle NSW with a code reader/scanner that would be able to help me out and maybe clear my codes? Thank you!

Text me (I'm working most of the time so I'll get back to you with a text when I can) @ 0490 498 602

Trigger the starter with a feed straight off the battery. Makes sure it's out of gear. Ignition will need to be on of course. Maybe the ignition switch failed
