  • TSI Fuel Economy

Had a surprise with the MFD showing I could get 800km from a Tank after filling it up yesterday..... Mind you i find that VERY unreliable, a bit of non frugal driving and that can go down a couple of 100km....

    L/100 I'm actually getting 7.7L/100km (MFDs showing 7.5)

What are the other TSI owners getting?

    I've got a 1.8TSI.
It's only got 4600km on it & still running in - fuel consumption improves on every fill up.

The best DTE I've seen on the MFD was 860km. The most I've driven is 760km.
MFD says I've averaged 7.0L/100 since new but my calcs say 7.1L/100. My last fill averaged 6.6L/100km. That's using 98RON. 95RONe10 from United gives 7.4L/100 (so cheaper per km to run 9.

Giving it some stick increases consumption to 9.0L-10L/100km.

my jetta (2.0TSI APR tuned) gets average of 8.0L/100k's.
the MFD usually shows around 700k's to empty with a full tank. adding the dte value to the distance already travelled comes in between 700-750k's.
      i use Mobil 98 fuel.

Isn't the 2.0 Jetta the TFSI engine? ie: It's slightly older technology than the 1.4 & 1.8TSI designs?

VAG are playing marketing spin meisters with engine acronyms these days, TSI = TFSI for some motors (in some markets). The engine badge can no longer be relied on to tell you which sort (variant) of engine is under the bonnet.

As with above, at the moment, there is only 1 real TSI engine, and that is the 1.4L TSI (Turbo and Supercharged)

VW in their infinite wisdom decided that they know better and have decided to name all their (non NA) petrol engines, whether they be turbo charged only or turbo and supercharged as TSI engines, there by confusing as many people as possible.

So, the 1.8 and the 2.0 TSI engines are actually only turbocharged, while the 1.4 is a turbo and supercharged engine.

Well, today I've done the same trip in an R32 and a Golf Edition TDI. One gave 9.6 lt/100 km, and the other 6.2 lt/100 km. So, I guess I averaged 7.9....

I got 7.3 on last tank .... 50L of fuel used and 683k's covered (635k's actual, with 50k's showing left on trip meter)

For me it is less about the fuel per 100 and more about how far I can go before having to fill up.

Over 650 is great in my opinion.

                    Hey Polarbear,

Using your interpretation (which I believe is an incorrect assumption to include the remaining DTE figure) we can do 960km around town!

The truth is we achieve 800+ km using 50 - 52 litres around town. I don't include the DTE in any of my calcs. Recently did on an interstate trip 1,070km on 54 litres! Cetane rocks and Octane is old school.

                      I am at 670 with 20km remaining.

I will fill it up tonight and see how much fuel it takes...

                      stay tuned

hmmm I feel like the TSI should be closer to the diesel figures... or is that too hopeful. I mean its only a 1.4 so shouldn't we be seeing 700 and then run out by 750 even in the city.

615-30 is when my fuel light is coming on and it makes me sad. Might as well be driving an LS3 V8 the way this thing chews the juice

How many L/100 are you getting? X per tank really means nothing as some people fill early & others leave it to the death.

                          What style of driving?

My 1.8TSI gets mid-6s to-from work along the M5. That's shortshifting, light acceleration but generally sitting on 90-110kmh. Around the suburbs it gets <8L/100km.

The furthest I've manage between fills is 780km, but 750/760 is around 50L of fuel.

Even though it's "only a 1.4" it's a very powerful 1.4 and you can't make power without fuel.
If you accelerate briskly, don't read the traffic, brake harshly, etc then you will use a lot of fuel. The biggest fuel user is starting from a dead-stop so if you can keep rolling you will notice a big improvement in fuel consumption.

PS: it sound like you are getting mid-8s fuel consumption - do you really think a 6 litre V8 would achieve anywhere near that under the same driving conditions?

                            TSI fuel consumption

From May to November, mainly commuting from Hills District to Sydney City (no country travel) averaged 7.8l/100km consistently for 10000 km. Best was 5.8l/100km over 35km (low traffic day, averaged 46km/h) and so far never more than 9.5l/100km on any single commute. Short trips (10k) can be 11.5l/100 without trying (pretty hilly around here).

The dealer told me the engine would 'free up' after 7500km so we'll see if there is any change.
