  • Road trip

Just arrived home from a 2000 km trip from Melbourne to Sydney (via the coast) and back via Canberra and the Hume.

The R32 gave an overall average consumption of 9.4 lt / 100 km, using 95 octane fuel. Obviously consumption varied quite dramatically over the journey, with the best day coming in at 8.7, and the worst at 10.1.

We ditched the horrid space saver, and I carried a full sized spare. Takes up a bit of room, but with care packing we just worked around it.

The car was an absolute pleasure to drive. I ate up the rather poorly surfaced NSW roads....I was really quite stunned at just how a car fitted with such low profile tyres and low suspension could still give a good ride. Lots of tyre noise on some of the coarser road surfaces, but nothing to really complain about.

The combination of the grip, and four wheel drive came into their own on a couple of days, as we hit some very wet weather for three days of the trip, and the car always felt sure footed....nothing like the HSV I once owned which was terrifying on a wet road. And that engine was just delightful, especially when passing on some of the Princes Hwy sections.

VWs seemed to be everywhere, especially the GTI. Only spotted two other R32s (a blue one in a torrential downpour near Mascot, and a grey one parked by the lake in Canberra). I was surprised to see two R50s...I'd even swap my Hilux for one of those.

The car was almost faultless. It's coming up for a year old and has 16,000 kms on it now, and it's rattle free. Only fault that appeared is a sort of random 'bong'. It doesn't seem to be associated with anything, so we'll get it looked at in the service later this week.

    Good report.

I just hope my 17 year old son doesn't find a "bong" in our car. That'll be the end of it all!!!!

I've always admired the way that VW have set out the R32 in terms of handling. good to hear you're making the most of it

It's amazing how many Golfs you see when you own one. Only noticed a couple before I had mine, now I notice several a day.

It is a great tourer. I was worried I'd lose that aspect when I parted with my XR8 but it eats comfortable mileage just as well, if not better.

Could have been me in the downpour at Mascot too.

A blue R32. Seemed to have something written on the back, but I didn't get close enough to see.

Not mine then, I was just another poor schmuck getting pelted in Mascot then.

My VW surprised me with some unexpected "bongs" at first. I figured them out after a while. One was the "snowflake" warning of low outside temperature (I see that a lot in winter in Canberra). Another one is leaving the blinker stalk up or down when switching off the engine (leaves that side parking lights on).

We've seen the snowflake a few times in Melbourne this year too. The indicator stalk could possibly explain some of them, but most just seem to occur as you're driving along, with nothing in particular happening. Very random, and not often. I'm hoping that it might appear in some sort of fault log.

If it "bongs" when you are driving along then it should display a warning message/light to let you know what it thinks is the problem, if it doesn't then it is difficult to say what is going on.

When the oil cooler leaked into the cooolant on my transporter the MFD had lots of error messages and warning lights displaying in sequence, so there was no chance of missing the fact that I had an engine problem.

That is ever so true! As soon as I got my car I've annoyed people with noticing any and every golf...a lot more than before I got it!

The snowflake has been getting a workout this winter in Perth too. When it comes on it's like the command to, "Hit turbo boost Kitt!", the engine really loves the cold dense air.
