btw does the golf gauge go below 0?? i've been close but haven't gotten there yet....nowadays i usually put petrol in way before i even get close due to my two experiences walking to the nearest servo to get some juice....

There seems to be about 8 litres left in my R32 when I run it to 0 kms to go.
I've run numerous cars down to zero, or as close to it as I'm game, so that I can get some idea of just how accurate or not the fuel gauge and trip computers are. I've never had any issue with crap in the tank, and only one of the cars (surprisingly, a HSV) was even close to empty as the DTG hit zero. Most have had 5 to 10 litres left, though the HSV was virtually empty (it was the only part of that car that seemed to work properly).

No, you can't see or smell electricity either - taking that attitude would be foolish & potentially fatal.
Did it ever occur to that by filling the car past the first click (which is recommended by everyone except a few people ) that you are defeating the evaporative emissions control system?
Yes, it did occur to me. That's why you don't dribble the fuel in. I've seen people dribble the fuel in and never get a click - they just wait until it's overflowing. So I'd ask you, which is better 2 or 3 clicks using a reasonable flow of fuel or just dribbling it in so that the backflow device doesn't cut in?
No, I don't think I'm defeating the emissions system, nor do I think I'm doing damage to it.
Fuel vapors are recovered via the vapour separator and charcoal canister, if you fill the tank so that it's overfull liquid can work it's way into the vapour separator and charcoal canister which can damage them and also leave no room for the fuel vapour as the fuel heats and cools which ends up being vented to the atmosphere.
Yes, I know how it works. I've done the theory & the practical and even passed the exam. I've done my risk assessment, looked at past history & am confident that everything is hunkydory.

Well, I probably do a few motoring things that are socially irresponsible (speeding, washing my car, driving excessive distances to work), so I may as well add 3 click filling to the list of sins I'll have to anser to at the Pearly Gates. I never implied that you were stupid, I said that the practice was stupid.
And as for wastage you lose fuel vapour and even liquid depending on how far you go which to me is money down the drain which I would rather use productively at WOT.
If I went on the first click at one servo I go to Id only be getting $1 worth of fuel every time...
And what the hell does it matter how much you fill it up if your letting it run so dry your leaning out your car, and putting added strain on the fuel pump. Not sure if it has been mentioned, but the fuel does help keep the pump cool.
