Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Fuel Dial stopped working

  • Fuel Dial stopped working

I was just changing over my dials to GTI ones in my existing cluster and suddenly my fuel dial stopped working.

All other dials are good and working. Range remaining calculator in the mfd still goes down as I drive along. I did a test with VCDS and all other dials cycle through the tests correctly. When it gets to the fuel dial test, it appears to not detect any faults but the needle doesn’t move.

    What could be the issue?

If there are no faults then it's possibly the stepper motor for the fuel gauge has failed.
They are relatively easy to replace if you have access to another cluster to remove one from. Solder back on and should work.

That could be it. The first time I re-connected the cluster it worked, but as I turned off the ignition, it moved counter-clockwise until it could not go any further (past empty) due to the instrument cluster cover being in the way.

I'll try transplanting the stepper motor out of the GTI donor cluster and see it that fixes it.

Hmm... went on a long drive last night after filling up in the morning and noticed that the range distance in the mfd did not go down at all - it went to 520km, but has hovered around this amount since then.

Could it be more than just the fuel gauge? Any tests I can run on VCDS to check?

Plugged in the donor cluster for fun and can see that the fuel gauge works correctly. It’s a newer cluster from an MY08, so got the ‘Immobiliser Active! SAFE’ message on the MFD.

I had a look at the cluster and it seems almost impossible to remove the pcb to desolder the dial motor without damaging the cluster.

Cluster is pretty straight forward to pull apart plenty of videos online.
Motor needs to be desoldered from the back of the board.
