Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • VCDS scan help for GTI

    Hi everyone, just joined the forum yesterday.

    During the long weekend I took my GTI to Royal National Park for a happy mountain drive. Everything was smooth and beautiful there. On the way back home I tried a fast throttle and later I noticed the exhaust fault warning light was on (not flashing though). The car runs nothing but normally, at least I can't tell any different feelings for its running.

    I searched the forum and some other VW owners also had similar experiences. Some of them suggested maybe an independent VCDS scan is a good option before going to the mechanics. They also pointed out there are many members from this forum who can help do a VCDS scan.

    Therefore, I am wondering if anyone happen to have some free time that can help me diagnose what's going on with that warning light here in Sydney. I live in Wentworth Point (close to Ryde) and during day time I am always in USYD (Darlington campus).

        Also these few days I drove and found some of power loss, as the acceleration is not as quick as before. Meanwhile the fuel consumption is poorer than before too. I turned off radio during the drive and found out the exhaust noise was much more than it used to be, felt like something got clogged in the exhaust pipe...

        I also discovered a horrible fact, that when car idles steady, sometimes it will give huge noise on the belts, and smokes come up from that area with a smell of burning rubber or plastic. The AC works fine so can that be a sign of dying alternator?

          while it was on a different type of car, and a diesel, i had similar symptoms. it was a faulty boost controller and split vacuum hoses. no vacuum stopped the turbo vanes from closing, so it sounded louder, and wouldn't spool up as quick, so less power. worse economy, and more smoke! could be a similar issue?

            Judging by the codes its possibly something to do with either fueling or a bad or blocked catalytic converter. I'm leaning more towards the latter.
