Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Factory Amplifier and Joying Head Unit

I have the factory R32 amplifier under the seat and have installed a Joying Android head unit which Joying say IS compatible with the stock amp. My question is is how do I ensure they're connected?

Is all the necessary wiring in the factory radio harness and it's just plug 'n' play?

Or do I have to do something with the orange AMP wire coming out of the Joying head unit? (Which I assume is the 12v remote to trigger the amp to turn on?)

The factory amp takes the output from the head unit and then sends that to the speakers. So your amp will be involved already.
If there is some way of configuring the Joying unit for amplifier rather than speaker level output you will get a better quality listening experience.

By default a headunit will think it is connected to speakers directly, so will be outputting speaker level unbalanced. The factory head units eg RCD510, RNS510, Discover media etc have the ability to be coded to change their output to line level balanced output, leaving the amplification to the much more powerful amplifier rather than relying on the internal 4x25w amplifier to make more volume.

Usually aftermarket head units require a line out converter when connecting to an amp as they don't have the capability to switch from speaker level out to line level out but I know nothing about this unit so you should consult the manufacturer.
Without a line out converter (or the internal ability to switch to line out) you will find that the sound will be quite loud and lack clarity as it is effectively being amplified twice...once by the head unit's internal amplifier and once again by the better external amp.

"Factory amp wiring is included in the CANBUS harness so no need to use the external amp wire, it's only for aftermarket amps. Select 'No Amp' option in settings."

Ok so the noting unit has a seperate amp output probably RCA I'd guess which will have the actual correct signal so go to an amp.
And I'd also guess it's only a stereo output not 4 channels so you have to go with you you've been given.
