Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Steering rack replacement?

    And the list continues...

My r32 still tracks to the left I took it in for a quick look at Volkwerke. He noticed the dreaded knock in the rack and is fairly confident that's causing my alignment issues. Going in this week to get the final call. I have noticed the steering lately is getting heavier, another symptom?

What pisses me off is I just replaced the LCA bushes and got a dead set kit, which according to a reputable suspension shop fixed the alignment issue, however if the rack was on its way out it was essentially a waste of money as it was the rack all along?

Checked etka I have gen 2 rack. Called VW for ****s and giggles $1700 with swap over. Vokwerke circa $2500 fitted but again going in next week for final assessment.

Interesting enough online can get a gen 3 rack for roughly $700 new from UK. Will this fit the R32? Checked twice just want to be sure. I can source the new harness too for $120.

Have you asked Volkwerke, or anyone, to replace the thrust pieces?

I replaced my rack after it was noisy AF with one from an R32

It’s quiet but has too much resistance. A mate and I pulled my old one apart. We removed the thrust pieces, lubed them up and put them back in, knock disappeared.

I’m going to go down that path with my current rack in the near future

Really interesting whilst rolling through all the posts I havent seen that mentioned. I will mention that to Volkwerke could save me a whole new rack.

Quick question will any MK6 golf steering rack retrofit on MK5 R32?

Told to not bother as if its say from a wreck you don't know its condition? but surely if you re-furb the MK6 rack and get the new harness its cheaper than getting a Gen 2 rack new plus replacement?

I let it go for ages but now my dreaded knock is getting louder so its only a matter of time before it goes completely caput

Hi spec 32 my mark V 32 had a clunking noise coming from what I thought was the steering rack, I took it to VW Village at Kensington they inspected the rack appeared ok but they found most of the bolts that all the steering and front end together were loose, after tightening these 95 percent of the noise went, Bill told me that the bearings at the top of struts wear and can even fall out which can also cause the same noise. Goodluck

had it assessed by a few places now, my strut bearings have been replaced. When car is stationary and turned off its more audible definite steering knock.

Called around and most power steering rack places I have called around say dont bother re-furb the rack as the rack itself is discontinued so looking at second hand gen 3 rack
