Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Ok, I currently own a Mk4 Bora... but am hopefully upgrading to a Mk5 Jetta soon. Just a few things i wanted to know

Which would be better? The FSI or the TDI (I'm on my P's so i can't drive the Turbo.... or that question would already be answered).

Also, for the FSI I would most probably go for manual, but for the TDI which would be the one to go? Manual or DSG?

I have considered the R32.. But i'm kinda wanting a Jetta. Just like the look of them. I wish there was a R32 Jetta...

But seriously, your insight will be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, the QLD P laws say you can drive a Turbo car only if it's Diesel.

        Crazy, isn't it?

A TSI GT is waaay more dangerous than an R32...just 'cause it's (double) blown and the R32 is naturally aspirated.

        Go figure.

I can understand allowing a turbo diesel (while powerful, they're not rockets) - and insurance companies make the same distinction - but it does seem crazy to just ban turbo petrols.

Anyhow, you'll have to drive them both and choose your personal preference. It's hard for anyone to say one or the other - I love my TDI and elected it after driving the petrol variants, but each to their own.

Yes,go for the Jetta, you will love it.
It is my 4th VW,and although the Bora is an excellent car,the Jetta is better,as it has so many standard luxury and safety features.
It is also bigger than the Bora, with much better rear space, and the styling is more up to date.
I have a FSI ...With the 6 speed tiptronic.
Try that version,it is very smooth.
            The car is quiet,nippy,and economical.
I also considered the manual, but thought the automatic suited the car better, and was advised that an automatic Jetta should have much better resale than a manual one,and Silver should be the easiest colour to resell,so I got a Silver auto.
It has done 29000 kilometers, and is awesome.
            It is a 2007 model.
Good luck with your shopping around.

I agree.. It's strange, the P plate laws dictate that I can drive any car under 200kw, V6 or less, not turbo or super charged (unless TDI). And an R32 is faster than many of those types.

Ok, so i'll test drive both variants when the time comes (hopefully the Jetta/Golf Estate will be available as i'll go for that).

I like the idea of the DSG gear box.. But i also like manual. I really wont know what to do

I'll let you know what i decide. I probably wouldn't go for the tiptronic FSI. I love driving manual and have told myself that if i get a FSI it'll be manual.

But i don't think Manual can compare to a DSG gear box (the price difference is something to think about though). And the TDI is better for the environment and more economical. You see what i mean! There are too many contradicting factors in this decision! Maybe a Mazda3 MPS would be easier..... kidding.

if you (or whoever is buying you the car) has the dosh for an r32... surely you could overlook the hatchback factor

Hmm i don't know.... You can make a Jetta look really good... and it's a sedan. (Even better if the wagon would come!)

And i'll be making myself poor. No one else.

Ideally, I would buy a Jetta and put an R32 engine in it.... Mind you that would be a waste when you could just buy an R36..

but the jetta is heavy and sluggish make sure you drive the r32 and the gt sport tdi just for curiosity sake.

makes sense to allow P plate drivers to drive turbo diesels in my opinion as the laws against turbo cars is partly targetted at preventing P platers driving modified japanese turbos such as the 200sx, rx7, nissan GTR etc

In my opinion you should drive the golf gt tdi back to back with a jetta before making a decision. After driving the jetta i thought it had a greater bias towards comfort with lighter steering and a greater tendency to roll in corners. Don't get me wrong i think it's a great car but packaged differently to a golf GT.

As for engine decisions on the jetta that also comes down to your personal preference. If i were you i'd only select the TDI if i was craving the torque. Being more fuel efficient isn't a great reason to buy a TDI at the moment with the price of diesel being so high relative to petrol

If you want a VAG wagon you should look at the Skoda Octavia and VW Passat wagons. Be careful what colour though, like the Jetta some colours seem to suit better than others.

Dont forget when calculating this that the current price of Premium (which all vw's ask for) is only a few cents cheaper than diesel. as of today in melbourne diesel is $1.67 where Premium is $1.64 at the same servo.

Diesel prices are a lot more stable as they dont have the weekly price cycle attached to them.

Defin huge variations with insurance! I got mine with VW for $750 or so which includes first 3 years NEW FOR OLD replacement!!!

No other insurance company could match that. Closest was $900-odd with 'agreed market value' which is code for 'we'll f&&* you and give you what we think anyway'
