Well if they consciously, albeit allegedly, use information posted here to impose restrictions on warranties, it doesn't really matter whether they are enthusiasts or not.
Anyhow, it's alleged behaviour.
I don't see a problem with it. If you stumbled across someone using your product outside of what it was designed for and spotted them the week after attempting to claim warranty on it, you'd happily accept?
The one practice I was never happy with was Ford, who would send people down to WSID to photograph any vehicle's plates on the drag strip. They market the vehicle as a performance vehicle then void warranties when you legally use it as a performance vehicle.
I remember being out at the drag's one night with a few friend's & one of them worked for a car company.(No names) One of them loves the drag's & motorsport. Anyway, some of the car's there were brand new off the lot & were getting a thumping on the strip.
He start's writing done the rego's. I ask why.
He explained it like this. Why the **** should we be paying for the way they treat their car's?
Goes to show you should always read the whole thread before you reply...
Ford does it, and not just targetting brand new cars, cars that are still under warranty. If the vehicle is unmodified and someone decides to take their vehicle to a legally sanctioned drag strip and put their foot to the floor for 400m, I hardly consider this abuse. You market a vehicle as a performance vehicle, it's a little hypocritical to then void a warranty because someone wishes to use the performance.
If modifications have been made to the vehicle, fine. All bets are off provided the modification contributed to the failure.
Is it really worth trying to save $500 every two year's with the risk of stuffing up a DSG at a cost of $15+K?
For some people it's not about saving $500, it's about being an enthusiast and enjoying working on your own car. Obviously it's not for everybody, but personally I would trust myself over the unknown of who will be working on my car at the dealership.
I have seen the way they push through as many cars as quickly as possible at my dealership, and can see the tell-tale signs of how roughly things have been removed etc., on my own car. While it's under warranty I'm letting them do oil changes & repairs, but the second it's out of warranty I'll be doing it myself.
In my garage I can be as slow and methodical as I like, there is no pressure to meet my quota for the day.

I suppose at the end of the day this is true to a large extent. However at the same time you've got to have the confidence and good instructions and/or knowhow on how to do it yourself as well.
Slightly off topic, but there's also the independents who have been recommended by many users on here due to their much higher than dealer quality work for a much better price. They also give us lots of free information and are more likely to notice other things that are amiss.
It helps when you take your car to someone who is as passionate about the dubs as we are here.
This thread has well and truly gone off track and just become a discussion on dealers and supposed VWA 'spies'. I suggest if there is further interest in that issue, a new thread be started.
In the meantime, does anyone else think it odd that the originator of this thread, who went on and on and on so vociferously about possible warranty implications of chipping and then turns around and vehemently defends his right to blow his warranty out of the water by doing his own DSG oil change had any credibility at all?
BTW ... kudos to both Seb and Guy for being so patient with him.
