Is that because they will wear out before they get a chance to get old ?

I've been told that tyres "age" and go hard, regardless of whether they are driven gently, hard, or not at all. I had an old ute that I rarely drove, and after about 7 years the tyres looked almost new, but had very little grip in the dry, and were lethal in the wet (they had reasonably good grip when they were first put on that ute).

So I'd be checking on the actual grip on tyres that were more than 3 years old, even if they had plenty of tread. Tyres are like brakes and steering, they need to work really well for those occassions when your life (and the lives of other people) depend on them.

I agree with this post, had several types of tyre, steer clear of the cheapies they ride horrible.

I don't buy Pirelli's any more the thing I found with them is that when new they are soft and grip like nothing else. However once say half worn they go hard and the grip is shockingly poor. Lethal in the wet.

Whereas a good Yokohama or Goodyear tyre seems to not be as good as a Pirelli initially, however over the life of the tyre the Yoko's and Gdyears seem to have better grip when worn.

Each to their own I suppose, just adding my experience with tyres.

Did you know, they have slightly different compounds, some are softer than others, therefore grip better, but wear out faster ?

Hence some tyres last longer than others, yes how hard you drive makes a difference.

But worth giving tyres some thought as it is all that keeps you on the road.

We are running the new P-Zero on the GTI on the street - they are awesome - we have switched from Dunlop Sport Maxx which were pretty good, but hell noisy when 1/2 worn. (but as said before - Everyone compares brand new tyres to their old worn out ones!)

Pirelli is hard to work out the models, but the pecking order is :

P-Zero Corsa (R compound tyre)
P-Zero (Standard equipment ofn Superleggera's, Aston's etc..)
P-Zero Rosso
P-Zero Nero
P-Zero System

To be honest, as much as I got insane mileage from the Contis, if I had to replace the Pirellis after 30k it would be well worth it

yeah I guess so - but it'd be a bit hard seeing as I don't receive delivery of it til 25 August. So my apologies for the obvious inadequacy of my crystal ball.

That's the price wise order anyway. Performance wise I believe the Rosso and Nero are switched. The Rosso is the comfort model whilst the Nero is the "tuner" sports model apparently.

A few thousand kms later, and the rears on my R32 are totally shot. Fronts have about 4 k left in them at the most. So, looks like my original guess of 20k for a set of R32 tyres wasn't far wrong.

Anyway, a new set goes on tomorrow. Which is doubly good now, as one of the rears has just picked up a nail.

I suggest people really have a good look at these before lashing out on pirelli's... IMHO.
